As this decade closes I'd like us all to stop remembering all the good games we've experienced, instead I want to bring you back to those frustrating memories when you realized that the game you longed for turned out to suck ass.

Its a tough one for me, I don't really have high expectations for games but these two games have broken my heart.

Culprits
Fable 2
I played Fable the Lost Chapters after being told everyday how awesome it was when it came out by my fanboy friend. Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed it, awesome spells it was DIFFICULT at some parts and had a long nice story.

Fable 2 comes along and just throws everything great about Fable: TLC out the window. Less spells, you can't die, infinite magic, no bosses, no armor, and the story was childish and stupid. I seriously have to gather 3 heroes together just to pop an old man in the head with a pistol. WTF?

Final Fantasy XIII
I don't even think I need to talk about this but I will. The first FF game I played was the 12th installation in the series and I thoroughly loved it for the humongous open world (impressive for a PS2 game), loads of fun quests taking you to formerly unexplored places, unique towns and cities, lots of weapons and armors, lots of magic and solving puzzles and completing quests to find the secret espers hidden all over was addicting. The battle system was great to. [footnote] Honestly to those that complain about the battle system I can't believe you like previous FF games. All Squenix did was allow the player to move around while the ATB filled. THATS IT. It looks much better than standing still taking turns slapping each other./rant[/footnote]

FFXIII arrives a few years later and completely destroys everything for me. No towns, terrible combat system, very basic magic abilities, linear as hell, very little armor weapons (from the 25 hours I played) and the cast is full of melodramatic crybabies.

*Sigh*

*Feel free to read my comments about those two games.

Daikatana is still less than a decade old, right? Final Fantasy X-2 can also be considered.

Waiting for more than half a decade to play the latest PC installment of Aliens Vs. Predator -- only to realize that it is complete garbage.

Valve saying it had three big announcements coming this year, and not ONE of them being Half Life 3. (No, I don't mean Episode 3. Don't quote me) I have officially given up hope for this series.

[ it was DIFFICULT
The only difficult part I found in Fable: LC was the stealth section. It wasn't even difficult in the good way. It was difficult in the frustrating way that makes me want to bang my head against my desk because it's just poorly designed.

Almost every Sonic and Tomb Raider game has made me "depressed" because all the old games kicked so much ass.
And the 4th game they made in the Jak & Daxter games made me so sad i wanted to cry the triology was the greatest fu**ing thing ever and then a new company comes and takes a giant sh*t on the ideas....the same goes for the Ratchet & Clank games.

Oh yes. This to the end of the Brink
Also, I'm tempted to say "the music industry" but then I thought "crossfade" and there goes that idea.

And Left 4 Dead. Valve's biggest failure ever... L4D2 was a big improvement, thankfully. What sort of person makes a zombie game WITHOUT FUCKING MELEE WEAPONS? That defeats the whole POINT D:

Seriously, I saw the trailers and thought it was the coolest idea. I wanted to love it, make a gang with my friends, and be addicted to it.

Then it came out, not only was it rather mediocre, but it got cancelled until next year. WTF? :(

Mass Effect 2 comes to mind. I hated just about everything about that games. The gameplay felt like shit, mining was retarded, the inventory/weapons/armor system sucked shit through a straw, the story was okay.

It killed most of the promise Mass Effect 1 had.
Have to second that. All the RPG elements removed in favor of a mediocre tunnel shooter with cover. Mako replaced with tedious mining. Something like 80% of the story is ultimately meaningless recruitment and loyalty missions - they could easily release the meaningful parts as one DLC, or skip the second game entirely and lose absolutely nothing (except money, so... yeah). At least the characters and dialogue are still fantastic.

But still ME2 isn't my biggest disappointment - that would have to be Spore. And everything American McGee released after Alice. And Spore. And Command & Conquer 4.

Basically, don't trust anything EA or McGee or Peter Molineux (Lionhead) or David Cage (Quantic Dream) have to say and you might avoid disappointment. :)

The whole Duke Nukem thing. Look, the game will suck, and it should just have stayed canceled.
And what are you basing this belief on?
The fact that anything overhyped will inevitably be a disappointment? Or perhaps because the screenshots/videos we've seen so far appear to be nothing more than a bland and uninspired product?

Mah biggest disappointment this year: Sonic 06. This was the one game, the ONE game I was hoping would FINALLY be a revival for the 3-D sonic games, but now they don't even deserve to be 6 feet under. No, the 3-D sonic games deserve to be stoned (stones thrown at them) flogged 50 times, kicked and beaten, then, hung from a razor wire noose, while being stabbed with rusty spoons. Yes, I do spend a lot of my time thinking about ways to torture my trespassers, why must you ask?

My biggest disappointment is that there hasn't been a single great video game movie. And it seems like not as many people are taking the medium seriously.

Command and conquer 4 for single handedly destroying the command and conquer series for me. Seriously, a game series that had unlimited pop cap, awesome super weapons and unique base building ditches it to become the world's worst RTT game.

God of War 3 is also up there, I absolutely loved God of war 1 2 and even quite enjoyed chains of Olympus, but God of war 3 just didn't seem as grand or as fun as the other games in the series. Making Kratos kill Gods by the truckload also took away the special feeling. Poseidon fine, an interesting challenging introduction. By the end you kill Hermes by running him down and curb stomping him, kind of loses the special feeling.
