I'm a bit of a Hicks fan. I saw one of his specials on HBO back when I was 11 or so but I didn't know who he was then. Now I actually know who he is and I think he was a pretty original comedian in the sense that he's funny.

Hell there's loads, but we tend to hate everything so much that we won't want to socialise , even with other fans :D

I'm a huge fan of Bill Hicks, I like him for the fact that, as far as comedians go, he's one of the most 'vicious' ones out there.

I did always find the 'Goatboy' sections a little...weird for my liking (and I normally like dark, weird and disturbing).

People who hate people...come together!

He's brilliant, motherfucking genius. I've always enjoyed his pro-smoking rants.

"There's an entire industry set up to research how to cure smoking related illnesses. All you non-smokers, you're the one's who are fucked." Paraphrased.

Hicks is the greatest.

The early material mainly attacks individuals involved in politics or culture but as he matured he starts to attack the ideas behind those individuals.

No other comedian manages to merge comedy with politics and philosophy and still be riotously funny.

The core message of his act (and very few stand-ups can claim to have a 'message') is that people should be good to each other because "life is just a ride" and because life is a ride we can change it any time we want to "just a choice, between fear and love". I cant be bothered to paraphrase his whole act but to me Hicks was like a prophet; more relevant today than in his own time, the problems with government, the mainstream media and the corporate hijack of popular culture have only gotten worse since his death.

Bill Hicks is amazing.

Gotta love his Rush Limbaugh(sp?) sketch, just pure hate towards one very repulsive racist person. "HE IS A SCAT MUNCHER! HE MUNCHES SCAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!"

?I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out.?

I'm still undecided on if its a good thing I actually relate to lines like that. Hicks is funny, even if he's stuck up his own arse.

Thats very true. Thats one of the main reasons I don't like his religous jokes, as he ends up coming across as the usual spiteful militant atheist.

I like him a lot. He sort of repeats himself a bit too much, but it's not that annoying. I love his smoking jokes.

He was a committed agnostic...he never said there was no god, and I've got all the dvds.

In fact he makes lots of references to his idea of god (a god that loves all human beings, not just the ones from your specific cult) and the good ideas of jesus, usually while mocking the pointless ritual, exclusivity and nonsense tied to christian religious practice.

He regularly attacked the fundamentalist christians who believe the world to be 6000 years old - because that belief is ridiculous. Also he was 'pro-choice' and made fun of the fundamentalist christians that blocked med-clinics (telling them that if they are so 'pro-life' they should instead "lock arms and block cemetaries") and those who murdered doctors for performing abortions ("christians killing people HAAAAHAHAHAHAHA") because they are also ridiculous (i.e. worthy of ridicule).

What is all this militant atheist BS? Seriously, I guess I must be a militant atheist because I believe religion and government should be kept totally apart and nations should be governed on rational principles based on empirical knowledge. I don't care if someone thinks that the dinosaurs were god's joke on us to test our faith, even though that belief is seriously funny, I just don't want some chump who thinks he can have private conversations with god and base his public policy on what god (privately) tells him in charge of my country.

If you think atheists are truly militant you need to take a holiday to Gaza or the West Bank and see what two groups of militant religious people are like. A so-called militant atheist will never blow up your children to prove a point.

Never knew the guy, somehow completely missed him. Would like to though after having learned about him. I'm a D. Leary fan, know all about the allegations and the likelihood that they're true. Still a D. Leary fan but really want to see as much of Bill Hicks as I can now.

I think what most of my impression of his religous views was based on on was when he was critising fundamentalists. When he used the joke asking why Jesus didn't run into dinosaurs 2000 years ago, it seemed as ignorant to me as the belief system he was decrying. I'm only basing my opinion off a couple of stand up dvds, but he never made a derogatory comment about atheists in either of them.

I used the word to describe some atheists (although I may have been wrong to label Hicks as one) who are agressive towards opposing viewpoints. Not in terms of literally taking military action.

He is in my top 5 comedians, Carlin is on the top.
Sometimes he could get a little to dark for my taste, but nobody could do a Satan impression like Hick, and the way he described how Leno would get so bored with his edgeless questions to his guests, that he one day would put a uzi in his mouth ,empty the clip, reload with another clip, empty that also and his blood and brain would splatter across the back wall in a peacock pattern..... BRILLIANT!!!

Most of his religous jokes are about the things that just dont make sense. Like the Earth having 6000 years only, which has been proved wrong. Hence the joke "Why didnt Jesus run into dinosaurs.".

I liked his marijuana joke. God made it so we could use it. God itself would have been pretty hight to make the Earth to start with.

Or rednecks. "wutcha ya reading for?"

I watched Sane Man the other day. It was at a Bill Hicks Tribute night that some local stand ups organised and at the end of the DVD I was shocked by the HUGE applause that it got.

A lot of the material seemed dated, but it would only take a few tweaks (eg substituting Debbie Gibson for Miley Cyrus) to sharpen it back to it's original power.
