I'm a big fan, I own most things worth owning related to him (including two copies of Love All The People) and have held him in very high regard for many years.
But one thing has really been bothering me lately, I sometimes think he is idolised a bit too much. I know this is rich coming from a huge fan and I've probably been guilty of it too, but whenever I speak to a lot of other people they view him as an absolute God.
I've seen his quotes posted up in almost every argument to do with religion, politics and drugs that I've ever been part of. It's like his word is holy, true and completely unquestionable. He does hit a lot of stuff on the head and he makes some very strong points but I don't think that copy and pasting him makes your point any more valid. Nor does liking him make you more enlightened and smart than those who don't.
His main message was one of personal choice. Yet I often think that people just follow his opinion without exercising their own thoughts and free will. He got the same issue when people criticised him for giving up smoking actually.
Anyway, I know there are other Hicks fans here and I was wondering if they ever found that Bill Hicks gets too much critical immunity? Is he held up as a God when in actual fact he was just a comedian with a sharp social eye? Does his infallible reputation ever sit uncomfortably with you?
