Bill O'Reilly defends Ellen DeGeneres

Wow. I never thought the day would come where I can truly say "I agree with Bill O'Reilly".

So the story is basically that Ellen was hired as a spokesperson for some random company. Then came the organization One Million Moms and voice their concern for "Gay propaganda" and demanded Ellen DeGeneres to be fired from her position as a spokesperson. What Bill says can be viewed in the video.

All I could think of was "I wish he was on our side". What a powerful ally he would've made.
I know people at the escapist hate the Fox New and everything that has to do with them, but this video really opened my eyes up.

You see, I think Bill O'Reilly is probably the best news reporter on Fox. Sure, he's argumentative, stubborn, doesn't know certain things, and doesn't like liberals at all (Like almost everyone else on Fox), but at least he has the decency to defend people. If this were Glenn Beck, he'd be on the "One Million Moms" side. I applaud Bill for defending Ellen DeGeneres (Although I don't like her show at all)

He didn't have a problem with the people not wanting to shop there anymore. What he had a problem with was an organization trying to influence JCPenny to fire their spokesperson because of their sexuality and lifestyle. It's one thing to do business with another company because you disagree with another's business practices, but it's another thing entirely to demand that someone be fired because they happen to disagree with you when it comes to something as subjective as morals. As he said, they technically have the right, but it is against the basic spirit of America and the spirit of Christianity. It's wrong, sick, and insulting to other Christians who use their faith to positively impact those around them.

I know that he was not against a boycott. And I know that he was against said influence.

The thing was he didn't seem to be against said influence because it's wrong to discriminate against gay people like that, he seemed to be against it on principle. While I'd say that sometimes it's alright to complain that they hired someone if they hired someone truly awful because who you hire as a spokesperson does send something of a message. They have no power to enforce said complaint after all, it is simply informing them that they did something that others find problematic. The issue, though, is that what they found problematic in this case was someone being gay.

I'm not sure what you mean by he was against it "on principle." Yes spokespeople do send messages of sorts, however JCPenny has the right to decide who their spokespeople are, and that includes whatever "messages" they might inadvertently send. And those people are perfectly within their rights (and are right) to not purchase from JCPenny if they happen to object to that business decision they made. However, it is wrong for them to attack one specific person. I know people who don't shop at WalMart because they disagree with the way they treat their employees and conduct their business. However, they do not actively go out and tell people who work at WalMart that they are bad people for supporting their business, and nor do they try and lobby to get WalMart closed up (well not most of them).

Neither Bill nor myself ever said it was against their rights to say what they're saying, because it's not. However, it's wrong, and as he said it is dangerously similar to the types of things people said about communists during the Red Scare. Oh they're ruining this country, oh they're corrupting the youth, oh we can't have them publicly employed anywhere they'll spoil everything!

Weird... I swear I went to sleep on Earth last night, first a Femshep video, now something from Bill O'Reilly (who, I have to add, -really- makes me want to post and ORLY Owl everytime I see his name)that I agree with, Did I wake up in Bizarro-World?


Anyway, sillyness aside, I really want this to be a sign that Fox might be realizing that bad attention is not the same as good attention, but that might be a bit overly optimistic. But I won't let myself get too down on it, I'm glad to see at least one person in that fustercluck of a "News" station that has his head on.. sort of straight.

And seeing Fox News lay the verbal smackdown on a target that I don't mind seeing tarred and feathered, well call me juvenile, but that just warms my heart.

All of you people talking like this is some crazy thing that you agree with Bill O'Reilly really need to get over yourselves. Is he a blowhard? Absolutely. Does he make bad arguments? Without question. But that doesn't make him a bad person and it doesn't make him stupid.

I used to watch his show before it just became unbearable to do so anymore. I agreed with him on quite a bit, but there were things I just couldn't stand. The fact that he's standing up for Ellen is in no way surprising to me. He's not some sort of ogre that just hates people that do things he doesn't agree with. He brings on liberals quite frequently and they yell at each other for a segment, then he moves on to something else.

I know it's hard to accept that he's more than the ridiculous clips you see every now and then from some organization with a different slant than his, but it's true. He probably has positions that you'd agree with if you gave him a chance to be a human being, instead of this blown out of proportions jerk everyone makes him out to be.

Try not judging people on a handful of minutes of exposition, regardless of if it's in context or not.

It amazes me that people actually exist that have such a view on life, and specifically, other people's lives.

What gender Ellen DeGeneres shares the bed with is her own damn choice, same goes for any other person. I am actually, EXTREMELY, pissed off that America still leads by bad example.

Bill O'Reilly is quite the interesting man. I rather respect his hard interviewing style and no BS attitude. Do I agree with everything he says? Nope, but he is certainly a man capable of making very rational and intelligent arguments. Here is an example of that.

Fox brings on a bunch of blundering idiots to argue sides of arguments to try to make the news "entertaining" (though I prefer my news comedy to meant to be actual comedy, not unintentional), but a fair amount of their anchors are pretty cool. They'd be a lot better if they didn't give idiots a place to talk, and they do. There are too many guests like that lady in the video on the programs.

... My parents watch Fox all the time.
