It felt to me like soulless fanservice. They had everything right technically but lost the heart in the process.

I loved the first BioShock and felt that it did not need a sequel. It was just fine as it was and I didn't really see where a sequel could enhance the plot.

That said, I still played BioShock 2 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The twist that Kessler mentioned was an interesting change (although I didn't have time to play it through more than once to see different scenarios) and the world and style of Rapture that I loved was still in tact. The game was an obvious cash-in, but it is probably the best unnecessary sequel I've ever played.

Gameplay was improved, but that's it. It told a new story, but it wasn't a particularly great one. Rapture wasn't developed much, and the storytelling itself was pretty standard.

Overall the game had decent execution, but not enough ambition. They should have sat on this longer until they really had a big selling point to promote. It's kind of like an add-on for Bioshock. More content, but nothing really different.
