BioShock Coming to the Mac Next Month

Yes, you can still play games on a Mac, and soon one of the better releases of the 21st centuty.

While the rest of the world has been busy getting hyped up for the release of BioShock 2 in February [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94814-BioShock-2-Returns-to-Rapture-in-February], Macintosh owners have been praying every night simply for the chance to experience the original. Well Macintosh owners, your prayers have finally been answered.

BioShock will be released in Europe and North America for the Macintosh on October 7, 2009. At this point, I think it's safe to say that the Mac as a gaming platform will never, ever, be on the same level as the PC. BioShock was released in North America for the PC more than two years ago on August 21, 2007. That's a large passage of time, especially when you consider that BioShock is a pretty big game and has been since its release.

According to Amazon.com, only 18 games have been released on the Macintosh in the past 90 days, as opposed to 203 on the PC. These stats are not the be-all-end-all of statistics, but they give you a general idea of the difference between the two platforms. It has been this way ever since I was a kid too. I specifically remember because for a few years there I only had access to a Macintosh (which I loved anyway and still sits in my closet). In fact, things are probably worse now, as Mac exclusives like Marathon at one time are just about non-existent. The battle is over and I think everyone knows it.

But that doesn't mean that Macintosh exclusive gamers don't still exist out there. And to ease your pain, those of you out there, I recommend an immediate purchase of BioShock when it is released next month. The journey to Rapture, BioShock's setting, is one of the finest experiences gaming has to offer. Hopefully the game's story hasn't been spoiled ten times over by now.

Wow, over an hour with no replies?

Anyway, good for the mac gamers, all 5 of them. I used to love playing Escape Velocity on my old Mac... good times...

Reselling the game when it's been forgotten...
Mac users are really behind.

To above post, it's only been less than 30 minutes.

I'm happy :)
I don't usually use my Mac for much gaming, aside from RTSes and online games, but the occasional gem like this is a very nice thing. Because, really, I don't want to have to use parallels to run a PC on my Mac when I don't have to.

Good for them. Hopefully they should be able to afford the game after spending so much on the hardware.

I have to ask: how much time and money does it take to make a game compatible with BOTH Mac and Windows operating systems? Is it really so significant that a developer would actually LOSE money by doing so?

Quite a bit i'm assuming. Both systems seem inextricably different and very few people actually use a Mac for gaming (I know i dont). Also Macs take up a small fraction of the market, and it is very unlikely that a game will sell anywhere near as many copies as it did on a PC. Its not like where porting a game form the Xbox to the PS3 will bring in a couple hundred thousand more sales.

Hmm, what part of macs having intel processors and being able to run windows just as well as any PC did you fellas miss out on? I played Bioshock on my MacBook Pro back in 2007.

Mac ports have lost their value, not because macs have lost ground as a platform, but because we just reboot into windows to play games these days.

The mac as a platform and operating system is gaining ground, and spreading. Slowly, but steadily.

And, yes, I invoke fanboy law on everyone badmouthing the Mac... Including me

EDIT: Oh wait, is it the Reversed Fanboy law?... I'm confused
The anti-troll law. That or "PC users will shut up on this one" decree.

Right you are. I am so very tired after work...

EDIT: Or maybe I'm in a diff. time zone and I was looking at the time displayed on my computer?

Yes, I am! It says this post was made a few minutes after 5, but it's really 6! Hooray for not being insane!

I wonder how many copies this will sell? I would have thought that anyone who was really interested in Bioshock would have played it on the 360 or Windows by now.

Oh wait, it's also come out for the PS3. Add that to the above list.

Anyone with a Mac who wants to play games on it has already installed Windows anyway, to take advantage of the better optimised drivers available.

In fact, I think I only have one game that I run under OSX, and that's Warcraft 3. (Under OSX it can detect widescreen resolutions, under Windows it can't).

As a Mac owner (yeah, you heard me) I'm pleased that this happened. I don't play many games on my Mac so I might not get this but I'm happy for all the Mac users like me.
