By the way, regarding the voxophones. Is it just me or does the noise that goes along with the speaking on them all sound like when you chew on a mouthful of Polo mints? It's starting to grate on me a bit, aswell as giving me a hankering for Polos.

I would love to know if anyone is in the same boat as me: despite desperately trying, I could never bring myself to like Bioshock. Everything I heard tell of it doing right (narrative, atmosphere, interesting and varied gameplay) I just couldn't see in it. Infinite looks a bit different and awesome, but all the reviews amount to "it's just as good as Bioshock." So does anyone who DIDN'T like the original have any impressions to share?
Ha! You're exactly in the same situation as I am!
See, I bought Bioshock bundle some time ago during a sale on Steam, and tried & tried to play it, but I just couldn't. I never found the city, story nor the game itself really interesting, so in the end I just gave up.

Infinite though seems really interesting, it feels like just the type of game I would love. People are giving it 5/5's and 10/10's, but is it REALLY that good or are fans just losing their shit?

Anyway, I'm probably going to buy this game on my payday, even though I didn't like the first two. :)

If anything, this is the Bioshock sequel that Bioshock 2 should have been, for better and for worse. The action isn't the most refined, and a little endemic of modern shooters (but to be honest I don't really have a problem with that), but I certainly enjoy it. The story and setting may not satisfy everyone, but damn, at least it tries; which is more than one can say about many releases.

Yeah, I'd recommend against that. It's a Bioshock sequel in the true sense of the word, if you didn't like the gameplay of Bioshock, you're probably not going to like Bioshock Infinite.

Sadly I'm not playing it yet.... why? (Dont read this if you dont care about me complaining about shipment problems)
Because the store I already preordered/prepurchased my premium edition copy, did not have a midnight release and when I walked in when they opened this morning, the shipment did not come yet. So i spent 2 hours waiting in the store on this super comfortable couch until it did come in. And when it did, they didnt bring any special copies. So I'm getting mine tomorrow along with a free GOW:J tshirt or a random free carepackage thing because I waited so long.

Anyways I can give my impressions based on everything Ive seen online about it (which was everything up to release).
Game looks awesome. Amazing reviews for it have been published. And I want it Noooooowwwww.

Yes, there was that. It got on my nerves too but after I started listening what was actually being said on the voxophones, I got over the irritation quickly.

Maybe, but personally I like the "sky" theme a lot more than the past "water" theme.
Also, the PC port was just terrible, with 30-fps physics cap and GFWL. Even controller-support was cut in the second game. Quite frankly, I hated the keyboard controls.

I've played for about 6 hours, and I'm loving it. I'm getting kind of confused by the story, but at least it's still interesting. I adore the railways by the way. They're a great way to have the kind of high mobility combat found in old pc shooters in a more modern game. Not a fan of the two weapon limit however. Because of it, I've only used 2 weapons on a regular basis for the last few hours. Gotta keep myself from playing on though, or I won't be able to sleep.

I'd like to know too. I tried Bioshock 3 times, and on the third attempt managed to get about halfway through. I got a slightly game-breaking glitch and just wasn't interested enough to keep on. I like the art style, but for some reason it never hooked me. The combat in particular felt way off for some reason. System Shock 2 on the other hand hooked me within the first twenty minutes.

So I'm kind of viewing Infinite as standalone game, but I really need to know if the gameplay holds up. Again, the art looks great, but I'm not interested anymore in paying $60 for a story unless it's really something else.

The gameplay and aesthetics alone justifies the purchase, I'm hoping to get my hands on it very soon.

Or to translate that more clearly: I hope to get it before the internet spoils EVERYTHING including the ending.
Seriously, stop that. Trying to scrape up $60, I'm not in the mood for spoilers!

8 FRIKING HOURS!!! How is that disappointing?! I can barely buy a game nowadays with a campaign that lasts 5 hours. Now I'm really hyped!

Well, I'm about one hour in and I can't say that I like it. I haven't met Elizabeth yet and I don't know if I care to meet her. I get that most games are (probably) made with an american audience in mind, but I don't care because everyone can relate with shooting other people, or jumping on a turtle's head, or exploring an underwater city. That's fine. But so far, the impression that I get is that this game would be better if I knew anything about the history of the United States. I'll play it, but... yep.

In addition to that, this is the first game where I actually had to use that "SHOW ME THE WAY PLEASE GAME" button. Here I am, taking bullets from all sides, shooting people, and I'm looking around wondering where the hell am I supposed to go next. Up to that point, all I heard about the skyline hook/thing in the game is that I can use it to rollercoaster my way around the city, but apparently it has also given me the ability to jump ridiculous distances. My character then goes "ooowoohoo, it's magnetic!" or something.

And everyone has the same face in this city.

I'm enjoying the game so far. I did find that some of the things that I've done in Booker's shoes as rather brutal, like punching a guy and lighting him on fire, or beheading someone with the skyhook. I gotta say I am loving the gameplay and story though, and both Booker and Elizabeth are very endearing to me.

Well I'm about 3 hours in and I have just arrived at the place where they are keeping Elizabeth. It took me so long because I was just walking round looking at all the pretty scenery and listening to the conversations of the people around me. I've got to say that so far I am very impressed.

Columbia looks beautiful and the game manages to capture a feeling of openness that few others have achieved. I also like the way the game introduces the basic mechanics in an organic way. I found my self naturally wandering around the carnival just looking around and was presently surprised when I found out two of the stalls are the tutorials for shooting and using plasmids *ahem* I mean vigorous.

I've mainly been trying to avoid any information about the games story/themes so the overt racism came as quite a shock and gives the game, for me at least, a very creepy feel.

I'm defiantly looking forward to playing some more tonight.

I'm at the Fink factory place thing. I'm really liking Elisabeth but I don't know if anyone else has brought this up but her animations can be really weird. Her lockpicking animation sometimes hits like 4FPS on its own or something, it just goes really jerky. I'm on the PC version by the way.

I like how Elisabeth gets mad with you and fucking lamps you in the face with the wrench from Bioshock 1 just for lying to her a 'lil' bit.

"You're a liar and a thug Mr DeWitt. But you're my only hope of getting to Paris."

Oh and the mechanic where Elisabeth throws you stuff is so simple yet so brilliant at the same time.

I just spam Murder of Crows and Shock Jockey for combat really. Crows because it stuns practically everyone in a fight and Shock Jockey because it took FOREVER to unlock so i'm going to get my money's worth kthx.

Also Skylines. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Just finished today, incredibly pleased with how not-terrible it is!

I'm very glad it wasn't just 'Bioshock in the sky' by way of tone. It's certainly not quite as spooky, more uncanny and unsettling, which I like. Not really a fan of horror/jump scares (there is at least one in the game, but it's WAY predictible. As in, "I wonder what will be behind me when I turn around because I know there will be something behind me when I turn around."), and I was apprehensive about being able to play the game to the fullest if it was on the same creep level as Bioshock.

The story reveals get cosmic in a hurry about two-thirds of the way through. Subtle and not-so-subtle hints beforehand, but I can see where people are coming from in saying it jumps the shark a tad. Didn't bother me, as the ending twist/reveal(s) are a pretty good payoff. Enough foreshadowing that a bit of thought will give a couple satisfying "Aha!" moments, and the level (interactive cutscene/vignette?) design is slick and surreal enough to never be off-putting. Found myself shamelessly wanting more and more as the story unfolded.

The combat can become a shooting gallery if you let it, but playing on Hard, I found that once I got the hang of switching Vigors and weapons on the fly it really opened up more than enough opportunities for fun combos.
Bucking Bronco'ing people up into the air and blasting them off a ledge with a shotgun was way more entertaining than the Undertow Vigor, for example.

If you feel like being game-breaking later on, upgrade Devil's Kiss and Bucking Bronco. Take the gear piece that makes enemies that die while affected by Devil's Kiss, Shock Jockey, or Bucking Bronco chain onto each other and the one that gives you Salt on Kill: Bucking Bronco everyone into the air > throw fireballs everywhere > kill at least one person with fireball > instant victory and wonderful fireworks display.

Found a lot of combat replayability with the gear bonuses and different vigor upgrades (you'll be hard pressed to get every purchasable unlock if you die at all, at least with the modest -I think modest, can't say for sure- amount of scavenging I did.

As other people have said, your lovely lady friend is absolutely never a liability in any way. Her gifts are a bit predictable, but otherwise a welcome addition.

All in all, very enjoyable and gorgeous experience in story, gameplay and world-building. Already looking forward to playing through it again in light of the ending.

I was in the same camp as you, Bioshock just never 'Wowed' me like it did others, in fact, the only reason I bought infinite was because XCOM was bundled with it and I was planning on getting XCOM anyway.

With that qualifying statement out of the way, Infinite is very impressive and I would recommend it. (And RPG games should take note, this is how companions should work)

Not been able to play it, Because i'm backwards and still use XP.

Slightly annoyed because steam doesn't actually provide any warning like it usually does that it's not compatible :(

Oh well
From the Steam page, System Requirements:

-Minimum
OS: Windows Vista SP2 32-bit

-Recommended:
OS: Windows 7 SP1 64-bit

That's pretty obvious to me...
Yeah, i can see that, but normally steam presents me with a orange text box, as it does for Just cause and X-Com. I also was originally going to get it on amazon (Which says XP) but went for steam because i wanted the TF2 Items.

Here's a screenie from amazon, saying it's XP compatible. http://i.imgur.com/1FHOEbV.png

I'm not saying it's not my fault, i should have read more into this. I was caught off guard, because i didn't see the usual warning i'm used too :P

Perhaps this is a good excuse to upgrade.

about 7 hours in and its really not doing it for me, running on a 680 its absolutely fecking gorgeous! the characters and voice acting are great , love liz and everything they did with her.

but columbia just seems to be pointless, ok slight story motives but so much time is spent underground and indoors it could just be any city circa 1890 America, it looks pretty but rapture set a tone and helped the story columbia just feels arbitrary to me. not finding the gameplay very engaging. the vigors are a bit meh, upgraded the first two and it makes it painfully pointless to use any others because they arent upgraded. and the guy that thought up the 2 weapon system needs taking out the back and beating with a stick! gun play is serviceable but nothing great. and its adopted the crysis 2 set up of of having "arena" areas but with fewer paths and less tactics.

but its the story letting it down really i think , really cant express why without massive spoilers but lack of protaganists and drive pretty much some it up.
