I don't think we're in Rapture anymore!

I just got back from my week Holiday without much interenet access so forgive me if this has been discussed to death but from what I get from the search bar it hasn't. Just wanted to see what people think of this new direction Bioshock is taking. Would you have prefered to remain in Rapture? Do you think this is even set in the same universe? Do think it will be able to be to remain a horror game in such an open enviroment? Did you have a Bioshock in your pants when you saw the trailer?

Personally I think this is everything a sequel should be, taking the basic theme of the preverious installment but at the same time not trying to replicate it with a few bonuses thrown in, like Bioshock 2 tried to do. I'm unsure how well the horror can work in this game with so much day light though, Left 4 Dead 2 proved that day light isn't great for horror games, but at the same time I could really see them using virtigo rather than clostaphobia to great effect, which would probably be better achieved in the day where you can see the ground rushing towards you. It be an interesting take on a horror game certainly.

I also get the feeling that this game is Bioshock in name and gameplay alone. First of all the game looks less realistic. An underwater utopia is slightly more realistic than a flying one with brick buildings (but only just). Plus we see some sort of ADAM like powers when the game is set in 1919, 30 years before a magical hand that shoots bees was even a twinkle in Andrew Ryans eye. It seems a bit odd that too completely different magical powers could exist simultaniasly in one world without it even being mentioned in Bioshock 1 or 2. Like Bioshock was a homage to System Shock this feels like the same situation for Bioshock.

So, what do you guys think of this?

Hmm...can't remember the last game being called 'Aquashock'.

Bioshock is much more than Rapture, at least according to the creative lead over at Irrational.

Now I really liked the first Bioshock. It's one my favorite games on the 360, despite it's many flaws.

Yet this....I just can't like this. Mainly because this doesn't look like it has anything remotely interesting in it. My favorite thing about the first game was the city itself. You could consider Rapture to be the best "character" in the game. The environment was perfect for the kind of horror setting. You could really feel a lot just by walking down the ruined halls of the once great city. Now here comes this game, which takes you out of Rapture, essentially throwing away the one thing I liked about it. And if Columbia is supposed to be just like Rapture, than they're probably going to just going to make it worse.

Though I'll admit I don't know much about the game, mostly because I'm not interested enough to learn more about it. Also one thing that really bothers me about that trailer is the Big Daddy....thing. It looks like it's wearing a diving suit. Why the hell would something in a sky city be wearing anything that resembles a diving suit?

It's probably just going to be what we've seen before, but with most of the tense moments where you're shrouded in darkness be replaced with "Whoa, look out, you're falling and the ground's rushing towards you and ARGH VERTIGO".

I'm looking forward to it regardless.

I am looking forward to it I think the new direction might make it a different experience while holding onto the key ideals of the bioshock saga

Damn. The escapist search bar really is a piece of shit.
Really? you found nothing on it? what did you search? There has been at least 4 threads in the last few days on this not including the official news thread on it.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/global/search/?q=Bioshock%3A+Infinite&cx=005672590579257297818%3Amkmrjhvsnwa&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=UTF-8&sa.x=17&sa.y=3&sa=Search#1292

There is a lot of results there plus more when you select specifically the forums category.

I don't get why everyone has a problem with the search bar? It works perfectly fine. What did you search?

Doesn't look all that much like a diving suit to me. This new thing is obviously Culumbias answer to the Big Daddy, but it doesn't look like they have all that much in common appart from being huge and intimidiating.

Look at the metalic fingers and the heart set behind a glass door. This isn't a monster in a diving suit, it's a steampunk robot.

And it looks like it is wearing a diving suit. The shape of the boots, the helmet, the general bulky appearance of the entire thing; it's a diving suit. They're obviously just trying to "recapture" the essence of the Big Daddy, and in my opinion failing to do so. It made sense for Big Daddy's to be wearing those suits in the first game. They did work out side of Rapture. I can't imagine why you would want such a cumbersome, clunky robot/person/whatever stumbling through your sky city. There's no practical reason for it, since you don't have to build the suit to withstand the crushing pressure of the ocean floor.

If you searched 'Bioshock Infinite' then they direct you to a news article on it. You have to click 'return me to search results' just above it to see all the threads.

OT: It looks pretty good; honestly I don't like Bioshock at all and felt the second was a far better game.

Hopefully Ken Levine can persuade me this time, because I share a number of ideas with him about what games should be doing (no boss battles for example).

He's not in a diving suit; he's wearing an overcoat for God's sake.

So you know the entire story already and can tell us that those monsters are just fan service and serve no practical purpose in the story?

It's not a diving suit, diving suits are fully sealed there is a big gap between its hand and sleeve, maybe the robot man just has some foot fungus and the boots give him enough room so it doesn't rub and get really painful.

Bioshock could still be a fitting name if it keeps the Bio-punk themes, like splicing...
OT: I don't know what to make of it... I'm very skeptical...

He's already admitted, "I don't know much about the game, mostly because I'm not interested enough to learn more about it." but he carried on commenting on it anyway.

I've already pointed out that he can't possibly be in a diving suit considering he's got a coat on.

My problem with this game isn't that they're making Bioshock in the sky, it's that (at least from what I've seen so far) it has nothing major that isn't just fan-service (I've heard they're going to have a clone of Andrew Ryan as the main bad guy, which seems more like not being able to come up with your own villain more then a plot point) that really links it to Bioshock. That might just be me though

To me it looks like a good start; I never considered Bioshock to be really scary, it was most likely something that kept you intrigued, and wanting to know more.
Daylight might ruin the mood we're used to; but I need to see more before I make any judgement.
The key to me is that you can find people that actually isn't trying to kill you on sight.

This, to me, puts me in the same situation as the new X-Com.

I like the looks of the game, it has many elements that appeal to me.

But it is nicking the name of another game for marketing purposes only. That shouldn't matter to me - hell, I thought Bioshock was overrated - but for some reason it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Also, I don't think Irrational games made the first or second one (though I could be wrong). If they didn't, why the hell would they be the ones who decide that?

Though I wouldn't be nearly as hard on the game if they named it Aeroshock, as that would be awesome.

It's pretty obvious that it's just a pathetic attempt to remake the Big Daddy, since that is apparently the most important thing in Bioshock. If there was a logical reason for these guys to be wearing bulky, large, cumbersome suits in sky town I wouldn't berate it. But I can't think of a single one, and none of the reasons I've heard make sense.

Speaking of which, the whole trailer is reminiscent of the original BioShock trailer. The main character is mercilessly mauled by the Big Daddy, and there life appears to be over. Then they find a way out of there predicament, only to be swiftly killed moments later. So it looks like there just taking Bioshock and shoving it into the sky. At least that's the impression the trailer gives.

Woodsey said:

Except that it looks like big, bulky diving suit based on what I saw in the trailer. I'm not saying it is a diving suit, it's just something that looks almost identical to a diving suit for no other reason than "well the Big Daddies wore those in the first game so they need them in this one".
