Shame, just looking at the third image, I could see myself getting behind this statuette. The pose doesn't look quite as bad to me now with Liara's reduced assets. The face stll doesn't sna with me though, I'm afraid.
BioWare, please stop. Anime stylings aren't bad; I honestly do believe that the anime artstyle is underused in Western titles and is misused when it is, and I would love if they implemented it in a proper way, but a game and universe like Mass Effect...
No. Just no. And if you were, Liara is a very, very bad choice.
I don't understand why people complain about this statue... It's exactly what Liara looks like. Well, not in ME1, but in ME3 this will most likely be her new look.
Ohh thank god for a moment I thought they where doing this to her in the actual game. Title is misleading and terrifying for all those who chose the liara route.
Well given how dedicated some ME fans were I'm sure most of the problems were with how the statue did not accurately recreate the aroma of Asari sweat and skin pigments.
Google taste of Tali's sweat and you'll find it. I just assumed most people would have seen it or at least be aware of it and I'll see if I can find it. Here it is anyway just look for the post by Thundertactics. [http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/128/index/4786509/70]
I used to consider myself a reasonable man, right until I read that post.
OT: Still doesn't change the fact that it's nothing like Liara. And for those arguing that changing a character is no big deal, ask yourselves: if I'm changing almost everything then why am I claiming it's the same character?
Bioware, why are you even doing this? WHY?! You create an amazingly detailed world which you expand using novels and comics. You have a vast array of unique and interesting races. You have a loyal and sometimes rabid fan base. Then you pull a ridiculous stunt like this and all you can do to remedy the situation is to give her smaller breasts? Can't you see the bigger problem at play here?
At least it isn't Tali, that's all I can say. For that you would lose ALL my wavering respect. It remains on but a knife's edge... until Mass Effect 3 comes out.
And this is one reason anime fans get a bad rep. I can't stand it when companies mix different styles together. Anime is anime. Mass Effect is Mass Effect.
Imagine an anime figurine of Wolverine. Bishonen. And big eyes.

Has anyone noticed that Bioware have been really slipping when it comes to their gender politics lately? I mean first in Mass Effect 2 they made all the female characters dress in sexualized outfits which was a stark contrast to the ordinary every day uniforms that everyone wore in the first game. They even pushed it over the top with the character Miranda, constantly shoving her arse into frame even during points where she ought to be taken seriously.
She is talking about her sister's life being in danger when this pops up.
Then they did that whole drastic redesign to Ashley Williams (favorite lady character btw) turning her from a toughened military tomboy to a spandex wearing supermodel in white tights, thigh high boots, long smooth hair and very large breasts. A change Bioware actually openly and unapologetically admit was done for sex appeal and going against a lot of her established characterization in the process.
The Ashley I knew and loved in Mass Effect 1 used to MOCK outfits like this.
Then there was that whole 'pick your femshep' thing which I honestly think was just bad on the face of it because it took what ought to be a big moment for the women in the Mass Effect community (i.e their icon is finally being legitimized) and turned it into a 'pick your own babe' style beauty contest by essentially asking the audience to 'rate' the various models of Shepard based on looks.
According to Bioware only 20% of players use FemShep, which means that statistically the other 80% who voted clearly only picked based on 'hotness'.
And now there's this hyper sexualized statue that forgoes any of Liara's actual characterization and turns her into an inept looking baby faced stripper. I cannot look at that model and honestly think to myself that this is the same woman who lead a desperate struggle against the most powerful crime syndcate in the galaxy.
WHAT ARE YOU?!
I mean, okay granted Bioware have improved a few of these problems. They finally made it an option to give most of the female characters proper clothing, they gave Ashley a suit of form fitting but practical armor, they presented the newley picked FemShep in a somewhat strong manner and they have toned down the Liara statue so it's at least not on the 'paedophilia' scale of uncomfortable sexualization.
That said I really think Bioware should have a look at the contrast between how the masculine beefcake fest Gears of War 3 treats its female characters to how they have at present. Gears never hyper sexualizes the women or makes them wear outfits specifically to show off their 'assets'. They never redesigned a female character solely to give her sex appeal and I don't think I'll be seeing a Bishojou statue of Anya Stroud being made any time soon.
All I'm saying is Bioware should probably think about this. It's a little worrying that a game series which spawned the following line: Is still MORE MATURE when it comes to the presentation of female characters then the company that we praise as being among gamings 'best' when it comes to writing.
Anyway ot:
I was never a huge fan of Liara, don't hate her but am not overly thrilled with her either. That said, while I like the idea of a statuette series of the ladies from Mass Effect (that's right, according to Bioware this is the first in a series) and I have no problem with sex appeal on the face of it, I would prefer it if the character still came across as 'strong' when they are being made to look sexy.
All the same, most of my opinions on Bioware's gender politics I just mentioned in the above post, the thing that worries me is that, again, there are going to be more. This time it's happening to a character who I'm largely indifferent towards but next time it could be Ashley, or Tali or Jack or Samara. One of the ones I actually like.
I'd only hope that they would learn from their mistakes and make the next ones look a little bit less.... jailbaitey.
