I was a huge Wing Commander fan. The technical blueprints for the spacecraft that came in the original box were very cool. I played every version of the game, all the way up to Prophecy. I made Lego-versions of the Hornet and the Dralthi. I watched the cartoons on USA while I was in college. I was a hopeless fan.
One of the big reasons for this, in retrospect, was that the game featured the cutting-edge of technology at the time. No other game at the time could touch its graphics. Sound cards had just broken onto the scene. WC2 had spoken dialogue, which was nearly unheard of during that time. I had to beg my dad to upgrade to a 386 just so I could play the first game.
It's "cutting-edge" nature however is also a drawback to revisiting the game. The glowing feeling of playing a game that is truly state-of-the-art will be gone. However, I will absolutely grab a copy and revisit memory lane...but I won't be surprised if the visit is short-lived.
