Hello Escapists!

This is a thread about Bisexuality. I thought it was due, since I've seen the topic come up in a few other threads.

I've actually been surprised every time at how little people know, which is understandable given the nature of the topic.

Bisexuality is confusing. In it's simplest form, it's an attraction to both genders. I'm not sure how this generates so much confusion, but it does.

Here's a copy of the Kinsey scale, which attempts to categorize different levels of Bisexuality :

{if you want to say where you placed on the scale, feel free, all though I'm not going to say it's accurate :p)

Of course, nothing is ever that simple. Bisexuality is in its infant stages of public recognition. This means that there are going to be plenty of misconceptions. I'm going to try and clear a few of them up!

Q. Doesn't being bisexual just mean that you're promiscuous?

A. No. Bisexuals have a normal sex drive.

Q. Aren't you really just gay, straight or lying?

A. Some gay men actually do choose to claim bisexuality to avoid coming out of the closet 100%, and of course some straight people pretend to be bisexual for the "cool" factor.

I'd wager that many of those who claim to be bisexual actually aren't, which makes it extremely difficult for people to take the whole thing seriously.

This is also why many bisexuals feel the need to "shout it from the mountain tops" that they are actually bi. It's part of our identity, even if it isn't a big deal to most.

Q. Do you just sleep with both genders?

A. No. Bisexuality is an actual attraction to both genders. It can be emotional or physical, but ideally both. This is where all the gray area comes from.

Kind of, haha. That's why I said it "attempts". It's accurate to a point, but only as accurate as you can be when it comes to bisexuality. You can't really say that you fit perfectly into any of those slots, but it helps a little bit.

It's mostly just the basics, like people assuming Bisexuals are whores by nature, or that we're lying or doing it for the attention etc. I'm not saying it's all that horrible, but it's there.

Are you bisexual?
Yep! I am physically and emotionally attracted to both sexes. I don't really have a preference either.

My question for Bendon, have you always felt this? Or was it gradually? Or just a sudden age?
This is a great question. It was actually gradual for me. I was only attracted to girls when I was 13. I'm 20 now, and I've been pretty comfortable for about 4 years. I've known people that started out bisexual and ended up gay or straight though. This is where a lot of the confusion comes from.

Feel free to ask your own questions so that I can edit in some answers here!

There's also Biphobia, which is just what it sounds like. The fear of bisexuals or bisexuality. This manifests in many ways, and is the cause for many of the foremost misconceptions that people tend to have.

I got this email from an biphobe on youtube (WARNING - Massive wall of text!!!)

Why would you take any of this as a joke?

There's a dark, malevolent social pattern exhibited by all bisexuals. They are treacherous, lying hate-mongers -- and we're here to expose their dirty deeds and mercilless attacks on the lives of the GQLT community.

After many thorough observations of unfortunate and negative behavioral patterns and extensive research, I believe it is time to completely unearth and face the all-too-overlooked pollutant, menace and hazard in our own backyard: 'bisexuality'. We must expose and disinfect these contaminants that will stop at nothing to shatter our lives and existence: 'bisexuals'. This unnoticed and appalling form of subtle homophobia that is pervasively demonstrated by the 'bisexuals' needs a vocal platform for decontamination. This is it.

The bisexual's anti-gay campaign is not some established association or cause. It rears it's ugly head in the underhanded, subtle homophobic ACTIONS of the misguided, duplicitous and vicious bisexual. The bisexual's double-crossing homophobic campaign is incremental and unevenly disseminated all across the Gay, Queer, Lesbian and Transgender (GQLT) Community. It's a slow, underlying social behavioral pattern of ferocious lying, cheating and homophobic double-crossing.

We're gonna go on a crusade across the nation and try to do away with the licentious bisexuals....End their subtly hateful, debauched, duplicitous and double-dealing massacre of other people's lives, homes and personal security! The deceptive and maliciously ambiguous bisexual is conspiring and lurking in both the gay and straight communities.. It is time to help them find their true way to Gay.. or expel them from our communities. In short, bisexuals are a vile, cheating, sinister sect that seeks to undermine the Gay movement.

The MOST formidable horror here is the BISEXUAL MALE (the deceptive cowards and merciless adulterers), namely: those who underhandedly parade around as strictly heterosexual in order to avoid anti-gay discrimination, terrorizing, bashing and attacks (bisexual guys befriend, pal-around and engage with homophobes while sexually dabbling in the Gay community- hypocrites!), like the vicious bisexual married men who cheat on their devoted, oblivious wives -- with equally oblivious and innocent Gay men (bisexuals ruin and destroy lives!). The poster-child and epitome of male-bisexuality and it's shocking, ugliest manifestation? Ted Haggard.

Dan Savage eloquently explains: "nominally bisexual men are not emotionally available to other men?in other words, these guys may have sex with other guys, but . . . they only have relationships with women. Which is why dating bi guys isn't something most gay men are willing to do. Even if the bi guy you're dating is single, you're still just his piece on the side." Bisexuals are heartless, secretly homophobic, sex fiends.

A large volume of people who cheat (have affairs), justify their adultery based on 'experimentation.' The 'bisexual' is behind that same dirty word: 'experimenting'. The vague connotations of that word are underhandedly utilized by the 'bisexuals' so they can continue to lie, cheat, break hearts and lead cruelly selfish dual lives without facing any consequences. They claim to be 'testing the waters to see whom they 'prefer', men or women, so we have no right to judge them.' Wrong! Bisexuals pave a particularly destructive path of turmoil, heartache, deception and pain.

The tragic part, is that many 'bisexuals' butcher the gay movement - inadvertently: by adhering to a misguided and viciously ambiguous lifestyle.. subsequently destroying and annihilating the lives, souls and contentment of innocent and impressionable Gays, Lesbians, Transgenders and Heterosexuals they target.

Next on the corrupt bisexual agenda: to nonsensically attempt to 'recruit' Gays and Lesbians to Heterosexuality. We all know that 'ex-gay' dealings are wrong, unfounded and treacherous -- yet the savage 'bisexual' wants to promote it! And we all know that they will fail miserably, but imagine the devastatingly damaging effects it would have on the psyches of Queers, Gays, and Lesbians! WE MUST STOP THEM.

If bisexuals are allowed their civil rights.... then so would liars, cheaters, hedonisitc adulterers, polygamists, male/female swingers, swindlers, thieves - or anyone else. Bisexuals are maintaining hetero-privilege and collaborating with the homophobes while simultaneously enjoying (and infiltrating) the Gay and Lesbian community and culture. Whatsmore, the bisexual's attempts to 'convert' Gays and Lesbians to Heterosexuality is possibly the greatest threat to our community. We know they cannot accomplish this -- yet the prospectively long-term detrimental psychological effects this would have on Queers, Gays and Lesbians should be enough to provoke grave concern. We must prevent any further monstrous anti-gay conspiring, attacks and afflictions that stem from the bisexual's fiery homophobic wrath.

Why should we (as out and proud Gays and Lesbians) confide, engage and trust in a "part-straight/part-gay" person (a bisexual) who will undoubtedly backstab us and end up siding with the heterosexual bigots, in order to escape anti-gay terrorizing, bashing, discrimination, oppression and persecution?

Why should we (as out and proud Gays and Lesbians) respect and embrace a group of people (bisexuals) who collaborate and pal-around with heterosexual homophobes, yet want to simultaneously enjoy the benefits and luxuries of our flourishing and loving Gay and Lesbian culture and community?

For the record, I am not hateful.

But I am angry: with the vicious anti-gay pattern that is exhibited by the homophobic "bisexuals," and the lengths they have gone to (and will continue to), to subtly disregard, defame, stigmatize and socially terrorize the GQLT community. There is no such thing as a "bisexual victim," they are simply the perpetrators of homophoBia, lies, bigotry and malicious sexual ambiguity.

United together as Gay, Queer, Lesbian, Transgender and Heterosexual Allies, we will fight the poisonous bisexual's underground anti-gay uprising. And we will triumph.

Warmly,
SaveOurCommunity

It's kind of a vicious cycle. Biphobia keeps misconceptions flowing, and vice versa. I haven't heard of anything violent though, thankfully. I don't even think it occurs that often, but I don't know for sure.

My friend is bi-sexual, she isn't a slut or an attention whore, she just can't help who she is attracted to.

I'm completely heterosexual. Although, sometimes I do wonder if I might be trisexual.

EDIT: Who's confused about bisexuality? This thread feels a bit unnecessary, but I may be wrong.

I think the only confusion in the matter will have been the bi-sexual people themselves at some point.

Have a look at the thread 'No Sex or Love ever, by Choice'.
Why? What's in that thread?

Careful lad, you could get banned D;.

Prolly won't. But so many societies out there have null tolerance on topics like these. But I think escapists are mature, so this'll prolly turn out to be an interesting topic.

OT: I am straight, and I don't understand how men can be attractive to other men, I simply can't comprehend it =/.

My question for Bendon, have you always felt this? Or was it gradually? Or just a sudden age?

I'm attracted to both genders but I refuse to say I'm bisexual because at this age, my hormones are all over the place.
Maybe in five years if I feel the same...

I'm bi and my friends call me greedy all the time! I know they mean it as a joke, but it can get a bit annoying

But yeah, I'm a person that is sexually attracted to males and females. I've just never understood what people find so confusing about bisexuality

ehhh.. pretty much... lol considering you basically place yourself on the scale... like for example im a 5 and the only real difference between a 5 and a 6 is that a 6 finds sex with a member of the opposite sex absolutely disgusting, like.. there is nothing worse

the scale is basically just, a simplified version for people, straight gay or bi, to state their... i dunno... level of hetero/homosexuality

I'm a happily monogamous bisexual.

There isn't really anything that confusing or odd about it, despite what some may claim.

This is why the scale is disgusting, having to state the level of your own sexuality implies you have issues with it.*

I'm a level 3 heterosexual with Level 2 homosexual tendencies, I'm also a level 69 paladin on Conquer online bitches, yeah you better weep when I loot your stats. And you better weep when I start dating your sister, or brother. Depending on which sexuality stat increases depending on the gear I wear.

edit* also I find it difficult to stomach the fact people need either tell the world their sexuality, or have to hide it to stop any phobic remarks purely because of how their brain is wired up. Its not fair I say. Equal rights to all genders and feelings, without having to label it all!
