aaaannnnnddd there goes any interest I had in the game.
Any MMO or game with a character creator that gender locks it's classes is automatic no in my book.
But it's not really gender locked as it seems. The Ranger is the female to the male Archer. The Warrior is the male to the female Valkyrie. And the Witch is the female to the Warlock male. Each has a counter balance class name split for the sake of the lore of the game.

Soooooo it's basically the exact same as TERA, Blade and Soul, and every other Korean-made MMO?
Especially if you rolled a KFM
Yeah, but who rolls a Kung Fu Master? They can't even be Lyn! Warlocks and Force Masters are much more fun.
I did!

she's a Gon, and my main to.

sides, I has 2 Lyn a Force Master and Lyn Blade. They are adorable, and not in that creepy pedo way the Elin are.

Sorry, but I totally disagree. Lyn are totally loli and shota material. They're right up there under the pedo type. Sure they're more clothed than the TERA tiny race, but they're along the same lines of exposure. The only ones not barking up that tree are the ones with the old-man face like the Master of the temple in the first tutorial area.

Aside from Witch/Warlock they have different abilities though. Warrior is dps I think while Valkyrie is more Paladin, etc ...

Except (a) they're NOT children, (b) they look nothing like children, and (c) just because some design is small and cute doesn't make it a child or intended to represent one. If someone automatically jumps to the conclusion that a small cute character is always a child, then maybe they're the one with the issues.

BDO is Buy to play like Gw2 not pay to play as someone above claimed, and so far over the week its been available in the west it's more than earned back the price i paid just with the amount of fun things you can do beyond the usual kill stuff to lvl up grind..it's like how Archeage should have been made and fully converted a guy who until around 10 days ago hated the game with a passion until i took the time to watch the numerous youtube videos folks have made that explain the many layers the game has.

I am totally on board with the whole gender/weapon/racelock problem of Korean MMOs but I am giving Black Desert a pass for one reason only: it's actually interesting and fun to play. Plus, if you think of it as more like a game with 4 classes, and each class is divided between a male/female version it kinda makes more sense (except of course when it totally doesn't).

People on the fence, if you can get a week pass to try it check it out....you will be pleasantly surprised at the depth and scope of Black Desert. It's doing stuff I've never seen a Korean MMO do before, and doing it well. Except for the gender/race /class restriction thing. Oh well.

I mean what fun is it that your class is tied down to a single weapon type? Never got the whole class/genderlock stuff and why its so prominent in asian mmos.
A lot of their entertainment follows these locked down tropes. Kinda like in Japanese anime, mangas and dating sim/visual novels all have the same stereotypical characters. I suspect they do it, because it's easy to churn out lots of product if they don't do anything original.

Anyone know if it's available in the UK? The website only shows prices in euros, and I'm hesitant to spend money if it's going to turn around and say "Oh no, the game's not available in your region yet." Or indeed be only able to play a social game without anyone speaking my language.

Maybe in this particular setting, but they do look a lot like representations of children you'd find in other media, so you can see why people would think they are. To me that picture looks like it's for some sort of whimsical children's adventure, not some sort of (not real) kiddie porn, but yeah, if I look at that, I see a representation of children, because there are specific things about the proportions of those characters that fit a child. A stylised child, but a child nonetheless.

It quite odd ... how the players can be hideous monsters male wise, but if they go female- they're kind of compelled to make them appear beautiful (least I am). Then again it depends on how you made them and why you made them appear as such.

It's not a crime obviously, but an interesting habit people tend to make when creating female characters.
Unless you're playing Saints Row than suddenly gender does not qualify for the crap you can make lol.
When people make male characters they usually want them to be masculine and dominant, even threatening.

When they make a woman they want her to be either cute n childish(wow gnomes or many of the asian loli races out there) or attractive and powerfull...(again like WoW elfes or any of the "evil" but highly attractive and bondage gear wearing) kinda what you would expect from a noblewoman in a fantasy setting.

Its what we are used to and what we like i guess. So ofcourse they give you these options.

I mean who wants to play a hero... that doesnt look the part? This is what escapism and enjoyment of fantasy games is all about right? Playing a badass instead of martin from accounting with a sword.

It depresses me honestly - helped push me out of my japanophile phase when I realized they're recycling archetypes and plots. Now they have done it to my favorite Nintendo franchise. SIGH.

But cynicism aside, I gave BDO a pass... after about 20 hours into it from the first closed beta. Why? Sudden world pvp at level 30. Getting farmed by high level patrol parties when questing is archaic and NOT FUN. Yes, I could of waited for them to leave. Not so easy when there were more than one party actively hunting helpless lowbies. Call it WoW syndrome, but I prefer my pvp controlled or split from pve. You'll get griefers regardless of the system in place.

Game is gorgeous though, no denying that. I mean, Korean larger-scale MMORPGs typically tend to make it as pretty as possible. I have liked that there is so much to do.

Ah, this reminds me of Nier's character design in the West and in the East. It is a reminder in video game form of the cultural differences and preferences.

I don't understand why there always has to be the one archtypical girl that is easily mistaken for a skankily dressed preteen girl. Now you can put in all the backstory about she is a million year old female hobbit all you want, doesn't detract from the creep factor.

I avoid gender locked class games, not for the lack of customisation (well there is that), but because without fail (so far), they have all been pvp centered pay to win games.

I have 2 Lyn, I know what they look like. Ijust don't feel like I should be on a watch list for rolling them like I do with the Elin.

I did a spot of investigating and found it was available in the UK. For anyone else curious, there's a list of territories here:

http://forum.blackdesertonline.com/index.php?/topic/786-territory-of-service-updated-13112015/

I've been playing on and off for a little while now, and I'm pretty impressed by what I've seen.
