Could be a portal to alternate universes, or different parts of our own. But both, even if true, are irrelevant because if we tried to use it we would be crushed.

i agree with Stephen Hawking on the theory that it might go to a parallel universe, but nothing could survive entering the black hole.

also, i think we should all go and watch an episode of The Universe right now. at least im inspired to.

I believe theres a cow on the other side.

And Jimi Hendrix.
And George Harrison.
Hendrix and Harrison would make the black hole collapse on itself, and destroy the both Universes.
Now imagine if Freddie Mercury was back there having a duet with Ronnie Van Zant, while Mitch Mitchell was having a drum solo, and they were all eating branston pickle.
excuse the double post.

While Dimebag is playin a harmonized shreddy solo with Randy Rhoads while Cliff Burton keeps everyone in time WHILE playing a solo. Then Layne Staley makes up a song on the spot to go along with all of that.

There is a room.
In that room there is a moose.
In the mouth of that moose are Brazil nuts.
In that room with that moose with those Brazil Nuts in it's mouth is the sound of chewing.
In that room with that moose with those Brazil Nuts in it's mouth that it is chewing there is no time.
Just a room with a moose chewing Brazil Nuts for all eternity.
You are, as we speak, in that room watching that moose chewing those Brazil Nuts for all time, alone, staring into it's mouth with those Brazil nuts hearing it crunch as the moose chews in that room in which there is no time.
And you will never get out.

umm.. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the literal space on the other side. black holes are just collapsed stars that happen to put out ridiculous amounts of gravity (just like regular stars). they're not portals to other dimenions and you've only got a 17% chance of escaping a black hole by being shot out the (what I can only describe as) magnetic poles.
Assuming the intense gravitational eddies and radiation doesn't tear you apart or liquefy and boil away your internal organs.

Actually, once you cross the event horizon, you're not getting out. Ever.

I like to think of it as a giant garbage disposer taking our crap into another section of the galaxy, have that sector 7 of the milky way!

It doesn't go anywhere, as it's not really a whole. It just sucks up matter that strays to close. It's not even destroyed from what I've read/watched on TV. In fact, sucked in matter and light escape sometimes. Also, a black whole has entropy, so it eventually will (in a VERY LONG time) break and all the matter it sucked up will escape.
A friend's father explained to me why black holes emit radiation.

One thing must first be known. Matter and anti-matter particles constantly pop into existance, collide, and turn back into energy.

It's not that anything is escaping from the black hole. Black holes "emit" radiation because sometimes matter appears right on the event horizon. One of the particles is sucked into the black hole while the other escapes into space. This also explains the theorized evaporation of black holes. Eventually they will suck up enough anti-matter to turn all the matter in the singularity into energy.

Ok, that's it, someone find Bill Nye and kick him in the balls. I'm gonna forget I ever watched that show as a child and remind myself that every word out of his mouth on his show was lies. I'm off to do some fresh research.

actually Hawking had to concede that stuff does survive a black hole. it was a famous bet, tho i think they changed the reward for the bet cause i remember if Kip won, he'd get a subscription to playboy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorne-Hawking-Preskill_bet

i think stuff will survive, but it won't be in the form we once knew it as

I have effectively blown your mind.

Personally, I'm fascinated by black holes, the "no light can escape!" part of it, the event horizon part of it, the whole singularity thing of of, it's all so exciting! Yay SCIENCE!

I always thought a Black Hole was actually a collapsed star with a gravity field so immense that not even photons (light) can escape it, thus making it impossible to see (or black).
It's not actually a hole, it's a very, very small and highly compacted, dense stellar body.
The stuff about them being portals or dimensional gateways is just stuff SciFi authors made up or is based on old research/theories.

It's not a long trip to find out what really IS on the other side of a black hole, there's one in the centre of our galaxy.

I'm no scientist, but i believe black holes are not gateways to other dimensions or indeed some way to fast-travel in our own universe, rather they crush everything that gets in their event horizon to a singular point of near-infinite mass, a point of such force that even time itself cannot escape, and as time is relevant to the observer, then if someone where to get too near the centre of the black hole then THEY would cease to exist, at least in any tangible sense.

But I'm probably wrong. I usually am.

Isn't a black hole just matter with an extremely high level of gravity?
Yeah, after the implosion it is the entire mass of the galaxy that was sucked into the dying star upon implosion packed extremely tight... this amount of mass is like having a table with a hole in the centre then putting a clothe over it and dropping a marble onto the cloth where the hole is... however, there is a theory saying that as black holes literally bend time and space around them it could be possible that another black hole connects with "this" one and creates a sort of worm-hole that could transport a person from the part of the universe that they are to the part with the other hole... BUT the holes are believed to only be connected for short amounts of time and would most certainly close while anything was trying to get through ripping it into atoms instantly... heck, even the approach to a black hole will take apart anything in strands... a process called spaghettification. :D

EDIT: I saw some of this on an episode of The Sky At Night(I think) with Patrick Moore, brilliant man... according to a song, he likes to play the xylophone. :D
