So I was wondering about the net today and I came across this link on collegehumour.

http://www.blackbirdhome.com/

It's a web browser designed specifically for black people. So it prioritises things like African news stories and other things from the black community when you do a search.

Now is it just me or does anyone else think this entire project is a colossal waste of time and resources. What's the point in designing this when the same results could be acheived by sticking some extra words in your average google search box?

Your thoughts?

The fact that collegehumour links to it should tell you enough.
I mean, this can't be serious?
Can it?

Well I dowloaded the browser and it works just as they said it would. I suppose it could still be a joke but it seems a bit TOO elaborate.

I think that's really weird, and like BudZer said, it's demeaning to black people. Why does there need to be a specific web browser? That seems like a step backwards in terms of equality. And for that matter, does that mean that someone could make a specifically "white" web browser? Wouldn't that make a lot of people angry? And actually calling it BLACKbird....

Well, it's free. People should give it a download before rushing to judgment.

The program is essentially a social network fused with a web browser. Other people who use this web browser aggregate their favorite sites and youtube videos, making it so a group of people who all have one interest will be informing each other of which websites to go to by affecting the search engine's results. Cuts out the RSS feed, makes it so you still can search by specific topic.

First results by topic:

video games: The First 11 Black Video Game Characters and their pros and cons.

http://microscopiq.com/2007/02/first-black-videogame-stars/

recipes: African Cooking and Recipes

http://www.africaguide.com/cooking.htm

ninja: Black Ninja Youtube Video

So...outside of being offended at the subject matter, what's the big deal? Would you care if it was a search browser that made everything relate to video games? Republican or Democratic websites? Australian, British, etc.?
