so is it right to blame hype for not liking a game? or is that just simply a lack of perspective on your part?

I try not to get caught up in 'the hype', it leads so many people to disappointment when as a matter of fact the game is still pretty good. If a company pitches a game as the best thing ever released and it turns out to be pap, that's a different argument.

Sure, a game might turn out to be "just alright" when it was hyped to be "the next big thing." This incongruity with what you thought the game would be could definitely detract from the experience. Especially if you're thinking the entire time, "this could've been so much better."

Hype only expresses popularity amongst waiting fans and a large sum being bought on the subject inevitably.

Unless you SERIOUSLY hate everything the fans loves, than yes you can blame it for not liking the game.

Well, I suppose it can explain why you don't like a game. But "blame" seems a bit strong. It's nobody else's fault if you went and got hyped over something.

Although I can't really sympathise. All the game I got hyped over actually turned out to be really good. Many of them actually exceeded my expectations (eg. Bioshock, Portal, Half Life 2, Amnesia).

...

PS. Hey OP, what exactly do you have against capital letters? Because your vocabulary suggests that you know what they're for. Anyone who can use "lack of perspective" in a sentence should know to start that sentence with a capital. Or is your shift key broken or something?

Hype can be problematic, because it means you're getting a different experience than someone who goes into it expecting nothing.

I mean, I didn't enjoy Inception as much as friends I knew, because they had seen it when it first came out, and then I heard everyone in the world talking about how good it was, but by the time I saw it I wasn't that impressed, because the effect it had on other people wasn't the same as the effect it had on me. And I think I would have liked it much more if I had gone in expecting nothing.

I don't think you can blame hype for hating something. Disappointment =/= hate. Well, for some people it seems to. It's possible I wouldn't have disliked FFXII as much if I hadn't seen so many people giving it perfect scores, or if I hadn't gotten myself so excited by Fable II maybe I would have thought it was quite adequate like Fable III, which I had no expectations for.

So, yeah, hype can be a genuine factor in changing someone's expectations and their actual experience of a game.

I got excited about Dragon Age 2 and looked what happened. I only have myself to blame. Then again I love fallout and tormented my friends for months squeeing about Vegas and it didn't dissapoint.

If Skyrim sucks I don't know what I will do, maybe just....cry.

off topic: You make some good threads OP <3

It depends.

Its not secret that Brink was hyped to hell and back about 50 million times, same thing with Dragon Age 2. And whilst they were (based upon what I've generally heard, I can't be sure as I haven't played either of em) overall good games their own hype sort of killed them.
I reckon if they weren't hyped up so much they would have been less critisised, though thats probably stating the obvious.

However then theres a game like Dead Space 2. It was hyped a fair bit but probably not as much as the other two above, and it came out, was awesome, and was pretty well received by both the players and the critics.
Then theres games that come out of nowhere with very little hype and become blockbusters, like Borderlands.

So it basically sorta seems to be something like this;
Game with lots of hype, turns out to be great upon release - Instant hit
Game with lots of hype, turns out be considerably worse than expectations but overwise ok - Both liked and hated. Usually mostly hated.
Game with little hype, turns out to be really damn good - Close to the level of an instant hit.
Game with little hype, turns out to be average or unnoteworthy upon release - Sinks into the ever expanding library of long forgotten games.

I don't think a game's hype has every ruined it for me personally, except for Halo Reach.
I remember popping the disk in hoping that its campaign would be good, based upon what was sort of indicated prior to release. Then I remember playing it and realising its campaign managed to be even less entertaining than Halo 3's, but it was probably my own damn fault for expecting a game with both single and multiplayer modes to have an at least half decent campaign.
Good thing the multiplayer turned out to be pretty cool though.

Blaming something on hype is like blaming TV adverts because the new deodorant currently marketed doesn't actually make every sexy lady on the street strip for you the moment she catches your 'manly' scent.

When someone get's caught into hype it's usually their own fault. More often then not you will read whines and complains that the game didn't met the expectations because the person didn't even bother to read anything about it other than adverts. Sometimes it's even so absurd that people expect completely different genre based purely on hype materials.

In short, blaming hype is a poor excuse for lack of effort to do even minimal research.

I hate Hype from fan-boys; however hype from marketing doesn't affect me, bother me, or even change my mind on my opinion of a game.

Oh no you don't!

I've seen your posts. There's a lot of them. And every single one looks like it was written by a ten year old.

Which is kind of a shame, because they're otherwise pretty intelligent and coherent.

...

Incidentally, if it turns out that you really are ten, I'm going to feel like an absolute bastard.

You should not blame hype, I bought homefront because of the hype and was very let down, but I guess it was my fault. I typically try demos, or just DL the game to try it then pay for it if I do like it, or delete it if I don't. But I got caught up in the hype, and felt really dumb because of it. It the end, it was my own fault, I should have waited.

For me it depends. If the company making it hypes it up then it's their own fault if the game doesn't live up to what people expect - though you can't really blame the game if it's the fans giving the hype.

Completely, utterly, wholly a lack of perspective.

But a very normal, psychological one.
Most people, when faced with an uncertain quantity, look to those around them for the correct response.
