Ok so I take it DOTA2 was being developed possibly under another name maybe as just an update and then Valve bought em up and it became DOTA2. I dont know about the original mod but I would assume you are correct in saying it featured only Blizzard characters but did DOTA2 really add all the non Blizzard characters? or were they slowly introduced throughout the years before DOTA2 was even a thing? I struggle to see how they can get away with adding obvious D & D characters like the Drow Ranger and Queen of Pain which are basically dark elf rangers and The Lady of Pain but whatever these previous ones also draw on further myths and legends to create characters so maybe theres some wiggle room.Aeshi said:There was no "DOTA2 before DOTA2", unless you count League of Legends. Before DOTA2 you just had DOTA, a Warcraft III mod that used Warcraft III characters and models (so it hardly ripped off "loads of franchises"). Characters and Models that Valve has basically copy-pasted whole sale, changed the colours of (sometimes not even that) and are now busy profiting off.Maximum Bert said:But wasnt DOTA2 a thing before Valve got near it? or at least some form of DOTA anyway. DOTA rips of loads of franchises for characters I really dont know how the hell they get away with it especially with all the money its pullin in now. I dont imagine they give the original creators of the characters anything. (maybe im wrong?)
As for how they got away with it: It's Valve. They just let the Hat-worshippers sic anyone who doesn't worship them two times a day.
But then you have someone like Lina who is an obvious reference in looks abilities and even spell names to Lina Inverse from slayers im surprised they dont include Naga the White Serpent as well (although the backstory twists Linas original story to rename Naga and make her the sister of Lina it seems). Is there some agreement between Lina Inverses creator and Valve or Icefrog? or do they have some sort of legal loophole which I am unaware of.
