As a competitive fighting game player, this is silly but I guess for casual people this sort of thing is what you'd worry about.
In fighters you have people go out and buy arcade sticks that cost hundreds of dollars but the attitude is that if you lose it's your fault and you should get good. If someone complained about the control method having a role in this they'd be laughed out of the door. I personally play with a pad and win fine so I have no issue but in some games the stick does have an advantage, I don't know if it's bigger in shooting games as I don't play those but the sheer mentality difference I see here is astounding.
If the player is good enough, they should be able to win with any form of control. Even if it is a handicap, by practicing enough you can overcome it anyways.
