That's not a fucking excuse. This wouldn't have happened if the game wasn't always online, especially since this particular instance of hacking is entirely Blizzard's fault.
Did you not ever hear of what happened in D2? Research OP.

Isn't this more than just simple account hacking? I would say its more in line with theft considering the auction house. You spend $250 on an item and it gets stolen from your character then isn't Blizzard liable?

Just because it isn't unusual doesn't make it acceptable. In fact, it makes it even more unacceptable that they still don't know how to deal with this issue.
no doubt.

you'd think they'd have learned to watch out for this kinda thing and react a little quicker and ya know, with some tact.

again.

this is why i do not PuG, it's ether solo or people i know out side the game

So basically, you buy your single player game in a store, can't play it because some fuckwit at blizzard thought always online was a good idea, and then after you do finally get to play it by downloading various programs, cracking into someone elses wi-fi and then waiting for blizzards servers to work, you power level up to level 30 and get all the good loot.

And then your single player game gets hacked into and all of your loot stolen.

What the hell happens when that bullshit real money auction house happens?
Can Blizzard be sued for not stopping theft?

Fuck you blizzard. So glad i didn't go near D3 when i heard about the auction house and the always online.

Fuck you blizzard.
Welcome to the modern era of gaming. The internet made this inevitable, MMOs made this likely to be done soon, Blizzard went ahead and did it.

I've been on the fence about getting this but if i do cracking the game seems more and more attractive, no lag or down time and no hacks and the AH doesn't really seem worth it.

Captcha "too bad"

How appropriate :p

Wasn't this the very thing that the DRM was supposed to protect us from? Oh right, its supposed to protect Blizzard's bottom line, and the customers can go fuck themselves.

Seriously fuck you Blizzard.
I don't own D3 nor do I plan on buying it. That being said I'm still pissed off about this! Like Matrix said, the DRM is supposed to protect the users from this sort of thing isn't it? That's what Blizzard said after all. Hold on a sec...

Responding to claims that even accounts using authenticators are being hacked, Blizzard added that "the Battle.net Authenticator and Battle.net Mobile Authenticator (a free app for iPhone and Android devices) continue to be some of the most effective measures we offer to help players protect themselves against account compromises." The studio encouraged all Battle.net users to use authenticators, and also made mention of the new "Battle.net SMS Protect" system, which allows users to monitor and maintain their accounts via text message.
The authenticator system may have been designed as a deterrent but it obviously isn't working as one and it doesn't look like Blizzard is too bothered by it. I wouldn't be surprised if Jim did a followup episode about the breaching of these accounts as another reason gamers should be pissed off at Blizzard for making D3 unplayable offline. I look forward to seeing how many hours it takes, if it even takes a single hour, before hackers break into the real-money auction houses and start stealing things a bit more important than in-game items.

Has anybody reported other vital information being stolen at this point? log-in information? credit card information? that sort of thing? If not then its only a matter of time.

As I understand it, the accounts aren't being breached, it's the characters through some server glitch. The authenticator remains hack free as far as I know.

Diablo 2 had some problems in multiplayer, sure. But Id like to see some links showing that single-player D2 players were having their characters accessed and tampered with against their will...

I dont remember that happening.

So much this.
If you see this with every WoW expansion someone somewhere should have said "Hey guys maybe we should fix this incredibly recurring problem that causes huge outburst of hate and inevitable bad PR" I guess everyone else was like "Sorry, could you repeat that, this massive pile of money makes it hard to hear what you're saying, or to give a fuck in the first place."

The interesting thing about Diablo is it seems to be like a single player MMO, you are playing off the server even in single player mode. You can see this because there are occasion rubber banding and other artifacts when you have high latency. In a sense they had to do this once they added the real cash AH to the game. I don't like it but I understand it and am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

The hacking stuff, well in any game that has a real money online component a two factor auth system like the authenticator is required imho.

figures...blizzard being blizzard

shit, i forgot his name...where is that one blizzard paladin at? usually he'd be in here by now throwing everyone out the window for getting up in arms about this. i'm surprised.

*hunches down with popcorn to watch*

honestly blizzard, if you had made an offline single player mode, this could have at LEAST been avoidable, but noooo, if you want to play D3, it's required of you to be online and near effectively be at some type of risk.

did d2 offline ever have any hacks or anything of some sort? please tell me if i'm wrong.

This is probably covered in the EULA, saying they are at no fault what-so-ever, even if the hack is server side.

Seems like Blizzard not wanting to take responsibility for their own security and other problems. I'm paticularly annoyed with them trying to say "oh well, the hacking isn't actually all that rampant, this is how it normally is". If this is how it normally is when a new game is released they bloody well should have been ready for it before now.

I'll be blunt, I am playing Diablo III, my copy finally showed up, but after 6 hours I'm already banging my head into the desk periodically (and came to kill some time blowing off steam on these forums). The online is horrible, I mean I've actually rubber banded in a Diablo game when I was by myself... I mean really. My only deaths so far (I'm towards the beginning of the game) have come from lag based banding and screen freezes. The Beta actually ran better than the finished product.

Right now the only way I think Blizzard could fix this would be to patch the game to have an offline mode, but I can't see them doing that for DRM-related reasons, not to mention that the always online component allows them to track loot apparently and provide the fuel for their cash auction house. Helping to reduce the possibility of people playing offline and ignoring the whole thing, or finding ways to dupe loot offline or whatever, and then basically print money.

That's because the people that were tampering were usually the actual players themselves. It was super easy to find stat editors and create crazy items that you wanted.

yes, *he who shall not be named* tends to favor in blizzard in every instance that i have lurked on...i generally laugh out loud or sit there with my face attached to my palm after reading all his replies to every person in the thread.

(i enjoyed the exploration in diablo too! in D2 i'd always be lurking every edge and destroying everything while my friends tried to rush to the boss and leave me behind as a TP back up for when they died XD )

ah, well thats not terribly help fully, but could be amusing to check back ....

and

yeah :3 just in act one there have been a lot of different things happen between the 5 characters i have, so it feels more rewarding, cause 'hey, that cave wasn't there last time' or 'creepy goatman alter with ghost goatman, that's new' :3 finding new stuff is fun (that and I'm trying to 'find' one last event for act 1)

Well, I guess I just got hit. I was playing when I got kicked and it told me someone logged in from another computer. Error 60.

I immediately changed my password and logged back in. Nothing appears to be lost so maybe I reacted quickly. Yeah though, I am playing single player and if not for Blizzard insisting I play online, I wouldn't have been.

Quick question; do you have an attached authenticator?
