Blizzard was a publicly traded company - didn't it have an obligation to its stockholders to make as much money as possible? Sams agreed: Yes
I always get nervous when I start to hear things like "...obligation to stock holders". Stock holders want money and profits. They will gladly kill the quality of a product if they can squeeze an extra dollar out if it by doing so. I hope that isn't the case with Blizzard in the future.

I did. :p

But my point is STILL that when it comes down to it that money rules first and foremost. If a stockholder could digitally create a giant turd and have that be the next MMO that made millions they would. I don't think they have an actual interest in quality.

Its basically becoming much like the movie industry. 90% crap movies, 10% quality film. Why do they keep making shit movies? Because they make billions of dollars. *see Transformers 2 (400 million so far).

I just hope that Blizzard manages to stay in the 10% of high quality even though they are a publicly traded company.

They could also be aiming for a slightly different crowd, as opposed to expecting people to play 2 games. If ones PvE and ones PvP in some way, they aren't going to expect people on both. Or if the new game is extremely hardcore, if people complain about it, they point them to WoW to play. I doubt they'd just release a generic game and hope the entire MMO crowd will play both.

1 of them devours enough weak willed souls with no self control a year
Fixed.

Would be interesting if they did something like what EVE is doing with their new mmofps, dust 514, where the action of hired players in the fps allow alliances in EVE to take control of planets and systems... Though you'd have to whack that with a pretty big hammer to fit it into WoW gameplay mechanics.

I hope it is a MMO that is like Eve-Online but with the awesomeness that is a blizzard product instead of the utter crap that is CCP. Eve-online where they just sit back and rack in the bucks while letting mental rejects and crazed crack addicted monkey griefers pretend to be PVPing.

Id really have to wait to see what its going to be based on before I make assumptions but seriously what else is there to go on but a Starcraft MMO.

Oh, I dunno, make up a whole new story in a whole new universe? I hear that worked out pretty well for Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.

Nope. Repeatedly said it'll be a new IP, not anything they already have (WC, SC, Diablo, Lost Vikings)

Hmm True. I just got owned. But yeah it could work if Blizzard work on their lore's like they did with StarCraft and WarCraft it could very well.

Lost Vikings was Blizzard made. I did not know that. But anyway yes it could be quite a nice MMO If they use their Storymaking Skills because I beleive that is what Blizzard does best and is what attracted alot of people to WOW in the first place.

I like how Blizzard's conceit seems to be that they're totally capable of creating a WoW-killer, despite the fact that no company has yet managed to achieve that lofty goal. Frankly, I wouldn't bet that Blizzard is capable of making a WoW-killer, even if they are the guys who made WoW to begin with. I think it's too big even for them to defeat, unless they slowly phase out WoW in favor of this new MMO.

Not sure if it's been said, but the problem with taking away customers from World of Warcraft is that they're not gaining as many NEW customers, but they still have all the expenses from creating and maintaining that game to begin with.

All I can think of is World of Starcraft.
And even if this MMO will be nothing like WoW Bliz is still shooting themselves in the foot.

A single day has 24 hours. Where then will WoW players find the time for another game? They hardly have the time for mundane things like eating or sleeping.
World of Starcraft was what popped into my head as well. As far as them shooting themselves in the foot, I highly doubt that they would. WoW won't always be the king of MMO's it will eventually see a decline and they will probably try to release the next one once WoW really begins that decline.

The ultimate solution: Grinding in one game gives benefits to the other game.

That way, you can waste time in one game to get benefits in the other one, allowing you to effectively play two games at once.

The thing is they're not trying to make a WoW killer, they're just making a new MMOG.

I know that, I read this article before I posted, which I can't say you did for my comment before you made your post. See, the whole point of this article is that Blizzard is explaining that they are trying their damnedest to not make a WoW-killer, which means they're assuming that if they do their job wrong, they could potentially make one. Which assumes they have the power to make a WoW-killer, which is what I'm disputing here (I'm saying they couldn't make one if they tried, much less if they didn't try). Which is the whole crux of the irony in my statement.

Frankly, I think you could've saved both me and you some time if you'd looked up "conceit" in the dictionary.
