Blog Haters Hack Tumblr

GNAA spokesman Leon Kaiser claims that at least 6,000 unique users are affected by the Tumblr hack.

A group calling itself the GNAA has propagated a worm intended to infect and attack Tumblr blogs. The attack is, according to GNAA spokesman Leon Kaiser, part of the group's ongoing war on blogging which, Kaiser claims, lowers journalistic standards "to the point where the number of friends a murderer has on Facebook has become news."

The attack replaces content with the GNAA screed, a post which calls on "emo" Tumblr users to "drink bleach and die." Kaiser claims that at least 6,000 unique users have been affected by the attack; accounts for Reuters, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly and The Verge are known to have been compromised.

Tumblr has advised users who have clicked on a post that begins "Dearest 'Tumblr' users" to immediately log out of all browsers that may be using Tumblr. Tumblr engineers claim to have fixed the problem, but should you encounter it there is an easy fix, according to Buzzfeed. Previous GNAA stunts include hacking the Obama campaign's social media site, and convincing several media outlets that, post Hurricane Sandy, people were organizing looting raids via Twitter, using the hashtag #Sandylootcrew.

I'm sorry but journalism going south has less to do with blogs and more to do with the internet in general. Newspapers etc haven't adapted to monetizing the internet and they are losing profits. So they have to cut back on journalists with say a science background leading to worse science reporting. Frankly these hackers are not helping the problem.

Yes, because attacking tumblr, the site that has become known as the place for shipping, fan-fiction, shipping, fan-girls, and shipping, somehow helps journalistic standards?

If you think tumblr had journalistic standards you really need to turn off the Fox News, and maybe put down the PCP while you are at it eh?

Let me show you what the article didn't show. This is what they were infecting blogs with.

Oh come on, no word about the Sherlock/Supernatural/Doctor Who/Adventure Time fandoms in there?

Not even a mention of Neil Gaiman or Wil Wheaton?

They weren't even trying.

Well that's drastic. I hardly think a few "emo" blogs are ruining the integrity of journalism. You can blame the media for that when Kim Kardashian getting a cold sore makes the fucking news.

I will agree though that some blogs are the most pointless crap who take themselves way too seriously and I wish those people would be taken down a notch. Inb4 flame but like I said in another post, militant vegan blogs are highly unpleasant.

The cold sore bit made me lol. Last night on the tv news I saw Kim Kardashian's cold sore- but didn't hear about the fire bombing of a federal building in Arizona by an iraqi immigrant, and his arrest. Thanks news.

maybe I'm a horrible person but that was amazing except for the "go kill yourself" bit. I seriously want the repeat after me lines on a shirt.

OT: Yes the average Tumblr is about as intelligent as the average youtube comment, yes I kinda hate the blogging phenomenon with all my soul, and yes "journalism" in the US is a joke especially on the internet, but all that said terrorizing people with a virus isn't going to change anything. At best some people are shut down temporarily, at worst the "journalists" turn this into their next hyper sensationalist news story, and the "emos" will just think you are jelous of their "l33t bl0gz".

Oh hey I remember those assholes for attacking my favourite artist tumblrs such as Oro and Braeburned and once again they somehow aim to wipe everything and put their shit on the site in their image.

Hope those retards get caught and locked off from the internet since their kind is never needed on here in the first place.

It's nice to see that the GNAA is still out there being petty, causing petty problems, for petty reasons. It's been years since I'd even been aware of there existence, but that ignorance should return soon enough.

There's two parts to this, I feel.

One is that there are idiots posting on blogs, but the other is that there are people willing to take that as news.

I feel going down this route of censoring people that don't meet certain journalistic criteria is leading to a dark path... after all, these blogs shouldn't exist if interest in them didn't exist either.

Maybe it's just the audience that you need to inform 'journalistic standards', not the messengers.

I usually find defaced sites amusing but this is beyond ridiculous. I may not use tumblr but there are people who genuinely rely on the site for legitimate purposes such showing off their art or reporting local events for their town or clubs. Even the people who do nothing but post porn did not deserve this. This is like going into a school and drawing graffiti all over the pictures hung in the hallways that students made. Even if it is a collage of pictures glued to a piece of construction paper it is still theirs and they invested time in making it. Defacing a website can sometimes be a force for good when trying to draw attention to legitimate issues however this is a sweeping attack on individuals.

I'm sorry, but this really pisses me off. What a bunch of petty motherfuckers.
I truly cannot tell if they are apathetic trolls out for a cheap lulz or overzealous people who actually possess the convictions they expressed in their defacing, regardless I feel these "petty motherfuckers" are going to deserve everything that comes their way.
