I have been kicking around the idea of starting up my own blog, and possibly even a website for a while now.
In the past I wrote a few blogs and ended up getting 1 of them published on TCG player, for which I received a small payment.
What i'm curious about is whether I should use a third party host for my blog, or attempt to make my own website from scratch.
On the one hand I have literally zero experience making websites, and while I have been experimenting with WYSIWYG software I would consider myself a beginner at best. The cost of starting up the website would be essentially negligible. Aside from time lost.
On the other hand third party hosts often take a decent cut out of possible revenues, and limit the overall feel of the blog. Any content created with about.com or blogspot at the start of the address instantly feels less professional.
So does anyone here have any experience setting up their own small website, or writing for a third party blog host? Any feedback relating to the start up process or past experience would be appreciated.
