I use my PS3 as a Bluray player as well as for games and it seems terrific to me. I just took a couple of kids to the theater and honestly, I liked the picture on my TV with Bluray better than what I was seeing on film.

In the meantime, I've heard that PS3 is an above average player, below average, and worse of all, that it runs differently than a normal player in a way that causes greater wear and tear than average.

What have you heard/read? If you use your PS3 as a Bluray player, what have been your experiences?

I use my ps3 as a bluray, and dvds look better on it as well. i've never heard anything about the wear and tear tho.

I think the ps3 serves as an average or below average player. I've compared to my dad's bluray, and i think his looks quite a bit better, the tv could be a factor as well.

Because only the latest Digital projectors have a +1080p resolution. A lot of places still use (the perfectly decent) 35mm prints, and dust and dirt can give it a grainy look.

OT: I find the PS3 to be a great BR player. Plus the updates keep it in line with the latest technology. It will even be 3D capable when the new HDMI specification comes in.

I think it depends on the movie personally, some look a hell of a lot better than others, played on the PS3 or not

the PS3 phat is a very good Blu Ray player with superb sound quality, the PS3 slim, not so much.

But us mere mortals would not be able to tell the difference, unless we somehow made ourselves believe the quality to be better on one system to the next.

Placebo.

I really like blu-ray. The PS3 is my only player though. But yes, excellent picture and sound.

I like the look of Blu-Ray but just as any HD resolution, it tends to be overrated in my opinion. A lot of movies, especially old ones, look better when they have that sort of washy quality to them, like the ones you have in old cinemas with the grainy effect.

It's gppd for games but I'd still wouldn't call it essential. I haven't had any experience in other BR players, so I don't know how it compares. The best thing about it is the clarity and that you can read the text in games, which becomes more and more of a problem.

Nope, the PS3 phat was designed from the ground up to be the best at everything in order to convince consumers to buy one*, it was actually considered the better buy against the top line Blue Ray players on the market at the time of sale.

The PS3 slim doesn't need that marketing muscle, ergo the tech has been stepped back a bit, the player a bit but the sound a hell of a lot.

It was poorly marketed though, so people don't know that its the best Blue Ray player money could buy.

Interesting note on projected movies. Thanks.

I work at a small cinema. We have a 35mm projector, and to upgrade to a digital one capable of 3D costs in the region of £15,000. Imagine that sort of cost spread over a multi-plex, and you'll see why they are in no rush to upgrade.

I've heard it's a bluray player, nothing about better or worse.

I find it to be perfectly okay though

But it is worth it. I noted today that I prefer watching movies at home. The snacks are less expensive and I have a really comfortable recliner. I have a 55" LED 240 hz, I can pause the movie if I need to hit the facility, my surround sound I got very cheap but kicks butt giving me terrific surround sound.

So, they can only get me to the theater a couple of ways now such as;
1) Event, must see it before anyone else kind of movie. It is very rare I feel this way anymore;
2) Babysitting: today I took my daughter and her friend just to get them out of the house;
or
3) A special screening, such as Avatar in 3D at IMAX.

Theater owners have to make the investment: keep the experience as good or better than we're starting to give ourselves at home using things like Bluray.

Blu-ray is a complete waste of money. A very slightly better picture is hardly worth the money you have to fork over for a player. DVDs still work just fine.
