I recently got two boardgames for a bargain, Settlers of Catan and Tide of Iron games. This got me thinking about boardgames in general and if, in this modern world of pixelated graphics, do members of the Escapist play boardgames other than DnD?.

I fucking love Scrabble. Stratego is good too but I recently lost my stratego adversary when he changed jobs.

I'm good at backgammon but not many people play.

Battleship. I don't know why, I just think it's a really fun game. Oh, and Monopoly of course.

I don't play boardgames anymore, but I used to be pretty good at Monolopy. I could set the board up to earn about $1000 a turn with houses and hotels.

Cosmic Encounters

Best board game ever! Wish I could get more of my friends to play it. Usually only get to play it with three people but it's best with at least six.

Scrabble and Chess are my two favorite board games. I would say Monopoly, but I usually stop enjoying it after the first 30 minutes (after that, everything goes to hell.)

Me and my friends absolutely love Settlers of Catan. The regular one, without any add-ons.

I think I played an add-on of Catan but I am not sure. I think I was plastered that night but I was sure it had something to do with space or it was a catan-space-add-on. On retrospect I hope it was Catan, god knows what I played that night :S

I've played a really fun board-game called Ricochet Robots. Anyone who likes board-games should try it out!

Settlers is a great place to start, I really liked it, and my family acquired it before it hit the giant popularity it has now after the "German Invasion" of boardgames...

Tide of Iron I never played but my dad has it and he's played with some of his war-gaming friends.

Diplomacy!
Yes, yes, Diplo is awesome.

My dad was Best France at the "world boardgaming championships" when they were known as "Avalon-Con."

He's played it and analyzed it more than most people would care to admit.

Cosmic Encounter is one of my favorite games still after all these years, that is, the Mayfair version (since there was a publication by Eon which had much better artwork but not-as-good rules, and a Hasbro version recently that sort of...changed it up, and it's still ok, but it has a lot less alien powers, a lot less edicts, changed how flares work, etc etc...)

But yeah, I really like that one too - my dad's had various versions of it for something going on 30+ years - it's ridiculously fun to play when my friends are in the mood to. As you know, it's "the game that breaks its own rules." :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyway, my favorite games, since I can't pick just one, I'll have to settle on Rico [http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3076], because when it came out, it was the first game of its kind, and it's inspired so many "development games" where you do similar things - including Caylus, Agricola, The Pillars of the Earth, and others that all have similar gameplay mechanics and ideas. Or ones like "Cuba" that really were total rip offs. :p
I've played this game something like 700 times on brettspielwelt.de, and at least 30-40 times in real life including with one of its expansions - it's great fun, and it's more strategic than it would seem, and I like how there's various options or development paths (tech trees for RTS players) to accomplish your goal.
Another one, as simple as it is, is Carcassonne [www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/822]. A clever little tile-placement game where you place your followers on roads and in cities and the like to score points as you build that road or city up with a game-board that is created by the players (through laying tiles.)
Britannia, as old as it is, is still a goodie, as is Empire Builder.
I could go on forever, probably, but if you're looking for a couple cute 2-player games, I recommend Kahuna, Rosenkönig, and Pyramid of the Jaguar.
If you're looking for abstract strategy games, (picture chess except better), I highly recommend anything of the GIPF [http://www.gipf.com/] series, my favorites being Dvonn and Zertz.
If you're looking for conflict games, like RISK except a bit more complex, less lucky, and personally more rewarding, I recommend Shogun [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shogun_(2006_board_game)], (The one from 2006, not the one from 1986), or Axis & Allies.
And if you're looking for old classics with a new twist, well..Risk 2142 is pretty cool if you ask me. :p
D&D is considered a board game?
Isn't it just?. I never played it and even though I tried learning it I just got lost in the translation. There are just so..many..things about it. Probably the best and worst boardgame ever.
Monopoly is my all-time favorite board game but I'm not allowed to play it anymore....apparently I get a little competitive!
I love monopoly. So many good and bad times.
I love Monopoly too, but sadly no one will ever play with me :( (It might just be that it take on average around 5hours-4 days to finish a game when playing with me).
Also I have Catan on the 360 and I honestly have never been more confused by a board game (well besides risk).
