I'm into tattoos myself. I don't really bother with the "when I'm older, if I want a job at FacelessCorp, etc." reasoning. I only have 70 or so years left on this planet (assuming I get to live a full life) and if I'm going to live them in constant fear of what the ramifications of getting a Bouncing Souls logo with the words "Born Free" on my forearm (done btw) are going to be then I might as well kill myself right now.

There was a similar thread about this where a lot of people were trying to dissuade a guy from splitting his tongue. My advice was, is and will always be: if you're sure about it, just do it. You're doing it for yourself and no one else. You wanna fork your tongue? That's what rocks your boat? Go to town on the sonovabitch, and if someone doesn't like it they can fuck right off.

Kind of goes without saying, I guess.

Piercings and tattoos I see no problem with, as long as people dont go overboard with them.
The rest I really dont get the point of, tongue splitting especially looks ridiculous and is pretty much a one way street to lispville and unemployable-town.

I knew a girl who was one of what we called the "Fry rats." You'd exit a bar on Fry st (Denton, TX) and they'd be leaning against the building, asking for a dollar. You'd hand it to them and cross the street after a couple of minutes spent catching up with a friend. Then they'd be sitting against the building you were about to enter, begging for a cigarette as if they'd never seen you before in their life. No job, but apparently they could afford Manic Panic. This one had a Mandarin tattoo on her head (but didn't know what "Mandarin" is), that she said was the Chinese symbol for "joy." My friends and I joked that it was the chinese symbol for "I don't want to work, ever."


Stripper tats are sexy in that I want to fuck you and then never speak to you again sort of way that I'm not particularly proud of; punker tattoos that aren't overboard are hot (Maggie Gyllenhall's sleeve in Stranger than Fiction is a perfect example). On a "normie" a tat here and there can be very attractive. Tats that are about more than sexuality or pissing off Mom and Dad, tats that have actual meaning, of which there are precious few, I like.

Also, I had a "lesbian" roommate (when I met her she was dating a guy) who got a giant purple fish that she named "Bob" on her right arm. She was a dance major. Fuckin' moron.

Some of these are just plain stupid and serve no artistic purpose. Do what you want with your body, I'm all for that, but don't call everything art just because you're trying to seek validation.

I'm not really fond of tattoos or piercings, I suppose earrings or other small piercings are okay, but anything more than that just creeps me out. I just don't like the look of tattoos on people, it just seems unnatural to me. And all of that other stuff you mentioned is just weird.

I respect people's rights to do whatever they want with their own bodies but that does not mean I have to like it.

On myself; tattoos and nothing else. I have four of them and will get at least one more for sure. They're very simple and only black; nothing extreme. Piercings make me cringe. I don't even have earrings. I keep imagining the ring getting stuck somewhere and then pulling the flesh and now I'm cringing again. Ugh. Everything else, not a chance.
On others; whatever they want. If they think flesh carving will make them beautiful and it makes them happy, who am I to judge? However, there should be some sane limit about how much of body art you put on yourself. It's a thin line between good taste and going crazy.

Discs, tongue splitting and such is a bit of overdoing it imo. Creating holes in yourself (be it on the earlobes or on your tongue or whatnot is freakin' scary, and splitting your tongue just seems like a recipe for disaster (Gotta be hard to re-adjust and be able to talk properly the few days after, and I bet there's gonna be complications of some kind down the line).

Tattoos are fair enough, as long as you don't get it because "it looks pretty, durrrr".

Piercings and such are ok I guess, as long as you don't go overboard. I'm a bit "old-fashioned" or whatever, so piercings in your face isn't exactly what I'd call pretty. Spoiler: Metal objects and X-ray/MR Imaging

If you have piercings or discs or any other metal objects, take 'em off before going to get an X-ray examination, will ya? It halts up our busy schedule if we gotta wait 5-10 minutes for you to remove all of those things, and if you don't those objects of yours might show up on the images and screw 'em up. And DO NOT even go into the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) chamber, those things of yours will get ripped off violently and damage our apparatus. Saw it happen once to a woman with one of 'em small rings in her ear, it got ripped off as soon as we opened that door and it got stuck on the door (luckily for us). Had to patch her ear up a bit before we could continue, and she had to leave without her earring (it got sent in the mail on her expense back to her apparently).

I'm a strong candidate for individual freedom. That includes "mutilating" your body however your want. It is not mine or anyone else's business to try and interfere.

However, when talking about personal taste, tattoos and a moderate amount of piercings (in moderate places, namely: not in genitalia) can look nice in my opinion. Moderation is the keyword here in fact: I can find a woman that has one or both hands covered in tattoos attractive, beyond that it's really a slippery slope.

I think any and all body art is alright, it's how that person chooses to express themselves. As long as they're not spouting some sort of hatred on their body, it's fair game

Can you support this statement? I ask because a good friend of mine bifurcated her tongue in the early '90s, prior to becoming an emergency care assistant & then a paramedic in London. As far as I'm aware she's never had a single problem with employment & is just about to qualify & practice as an emergency care practitioner.

In addition to your claim of inevitable unemployment I'm afraid I must also take issue with your insistence that bifurcation results in lisping. Sibilants are produced by the specific position of the lips & teeth, predominantly with the tongue flat. This means of course that bifurcation isn't characterized by lisped or slurred speech.

I'm curious why you'd make these assertions for any reason other than bigoted prejudice.

I can't speak for what they said about the lisp, but in the US a lot of hospitals have very, very strict codes with appearance. For instance I was told, before I even entered school for radiology, if I had any tattoos they would need to be covered at all times, my hair could not be any unrealistic colors, and any extraneous, visible piercings, other than a very conservative amount allowed in the ear, including but not limited to eyebrow, nose, and tongue, would have to be removed during working hours. I never thought of asking about such a procedure as bifurcation, since it's never came across my mind, but I assume it would fall into the same category. One can't really remove or conceal a tongue bifurcation when they're talking face to face with patients.

Of course, my clinical choices were all church affiliated hospitals and European hospitals are likely more progressive about it.

It's not uncommon in the professional world, at all, to deny employment because of tattoos and piercings. Strange body modifications undermine the customer's confidence. Is it small minded and bigoted? Sure is, thank the people who take it too far, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Also, try producing C, D, J, L, N, S, T, or Z sounds without using your tongue at all.

Two piercings in each ear and I intend to get a tattoo soon.
Only time I really hate shit like tattoos is when its generic crap. You can tell some people just walk into the tattoo parlour, open a sample book and pick whatever generic crap they are into.
At least my tattoo is gonna be unique to me.

Ugh. Wall flash is the bane of every tat artist's existence! Unfortunately it pays the bills. Everything in that book or on the wall is on many other people.

Three things one should never ever think about getting tattooed (because trust me six other people have had it done that same day):

Women:
1) a rose on the ankle, wrist or anywhere near the neck or navel.
2) a butterfly or dolphin in any of the same areas
3) a triangular shaped tribal/filigree/celtic anything on the lower back or chest

Men:
1) Armband - tribal, celtic or barbed wire, take your pick, they did three of each today (and if you insist anyway, don't be a pussy - get it all the way around)
2) Tasmanian Deviltm or a bulldog- seriously at least one a day. Guys stop it please! (any other looney tunes character either, you don't look cute with a tweety bird on your shoulder, you look stupid)
3) Giant words in an Olde English font. You don't look gangster guys and no one can read the needlessly complicated font you chose anyway.

Stick with the classics or spend the money to have an artist create something for you. A good tat begins with an art and design session, then the artists makes a few mockups. You should have seen your artist at least twice before you put ink to skin.

Bad tattoos give all tattoos a bad name.

Edit: Might as well mention that I've got two piercings in my left ear (I'm planning on getting a third one, but haven't gotten around to it), one in my right ear and a ring in my left nostril. I'm gonna get a tattoo of the cancer symbol in ruby red once I can afford it, too, but I'm a poor student so that'll probably be a while.

HOLY crap, this dude is screwed! Wow, that is definitely a perfect example of going waaaay too far.

Tattoos... I own several myself. I dont have a problem with people getting them, my only issue is that it should MEAN something to you. To me, people that just suddenly decide they want a tat and go strolling into the ink parlor and pick some random flash off the wall just dont get it.

Piercings... I am fine with it to a degree. Navel, tongue, nipples, ears, eyebrows, etc. I dont have a problem with any of that, but the thought of a Prince Albert makes my guts twist. Heavy piercings just dont look attractive to me.

Anything beyond that... (like that guy in the picture that I quoted)... is pure insanity.

But I often wonder how many of these body modders would have still done it if prudes didn't exist, if people were just like "yeah whatever" and we lived in a world free of prejudice. True, but unfortunately for them the kind of attention they are getting isn't really the good kind. Often it's the freak-show staring kind of attention, especially if they are freak-show worthy. Everyone else who had stuff like piercings and tattoos done to them, but with moderation, won't really get that much attention because a lot of people get tattoos and piercings.
