I'm fine with them, I don't think they are attractive, but that's just me.

People have been applying tattoo's and piercings to their bodies for thousands of years. It's just the vision of self improvement. And if you feel that lumps of metal jammed in your face is self improvement, go for it!

But as with everything. Everything in moderation please, there are kids around.

A little here and there can help accentuate and direct beauty, like gold leafing on stationary. Too much and you are pleading for attention and alerting others to your psychological damage, like wearing a rubber innertube and nothing more to a job interview.

I'm full of piercings and have a number of tattoo's I like them and I do think they're "Art".

Tongue splitting and stuff does freak me out, alas, it's the persons own body so I don't understand why others kick up such a fuss like it effects them.

As for myself....

Piercings: Don't mind them, but most are not for me. I have one in my upper left ear. Tried the lobes but the wiggling kept getting to me and I have enough of a problem with needles I kept going "Oh God! Needle in my ear!!!" The cartilage one was my first (although it's been re-pierced since) and doesn't wiggle like the ones in my lobes did.

Tattoos: Love them except for the stupid/crude ones. Poorly done ones cry "low budget" or "I didn't really care" or "the artist was an ass." I've got one myself of amaterasu's sun disc weapon (which needs a little finishing), and plan on at least one more. Unfortunately since I'm an actor I can't get too many or the lower arm sleeve that I'd like, but I'm content with what I have. ^_^

Tongue splitting/Flesh carving/Lip discing are all a little much for me, but it's totally cool if someone else wants it done. I might not always find it attractive, but that shouldn't stop other people from doing what they want.

EDIT:

Okay, so the only other body modification I could see getting would be some kind of plastic surgery to make my ears pointed. I really like that look. Although, I would prefer that it be the result of some form of magic rather than surgery if that were an option. ^_^

"bifurcation" as your insist on calling it is designed to shock people yeah? Not something you want to instill in a potential employer is it? Or something you want to see in someone treating your wounds/serving your food or thousands of other jobs that involve working with the public. Nice to hear one person out of many has got lucky though.

'Bifurcation' is the correct term, so using the proper word makes sense. I know three people who have had it done, not because they wanted to shock people but as an aesthetic choice. I just happened to choose one example, but all three have good careers.

Also you seem to of got your facts about how the sounds of speech are produced- lisps have many causes but teeth play zero role in it- most often its the placement and movement of the tongue more then anything, and cutting a great big hole in the middle of it is likely to cause one, and if it doesnt other speech impediments are very likely.

If you read my original post you'll see that I was referring to sibilants, & how they they are formed without using the tongue e.g. try saying 'susurrus', you'll notice that the tip of the tongue is flat & still, but the teeth are together as the lips are drawn back. Bifurcation is not "cutting a great big hole in the middle" of the tongue, it's an incision at the tip. A slight lisp is much more likely to result from a pierced tongue, & that likelihood is small. Perhaps you're thinking of something else.

Also kinda curious why you've singled me out of the all those others in thread have all said that tonguesplitting and its ilk are plain ridiculous, but meh.

I apologize if you feel that I'm harassing you, that wasn't my intention. I replied to your post because you made what I believe to be prejudiced, unfounded assertions. It seems reasonable that you support them.

That's the beauty of 'judge people by what they do, not what they are', I get to judge people by what they do! If you slice holes into your cheeks, scar your face and implant fake horns onto your head then I frankly think you're probably mentally ill (and a few studies agree) and that your behaviour shouldn't be encouraged.

Darn, I was with you until the last sentence. Wouldn't mind getting small horn implants, but prolly never will. Yep... I'm definitely on the crazy tree No I'm not getting out... find yer own spot!

What I don't get is why do that, when you can just get it tattooed to look like that? Hurts a lot less and much less chance of infection.

I think the more technical name for it is "scarification".

Tattoo's = awesome. I have 1 full sleeve and after 4 years I still look at it and think "that's fucking bad ass!"

Piercing = ok/good. I have my labret pierced and have for 5 years, I don't love it but I am fond of it.

Scarification = stupid. See above for why

Tongue splitting = stupid. After the whole "eeee, look at that" people are just going to think "what a tool!" not "wow, he is different and edgy". I bet it makes licking an ice cream (or more adult things) a pain in the ass to do!

To add one to the list, skull implants.

I think these can be quite cool like a Mohawk style set skull studs along the top of your head. Kind of like this guy...

It would be a ***** to shave your head though.

Unless it is someone I personally know who is considering it, I usually consider it someone else's business. The important things are, make sure you know what you're getting yourself into, and make sure you're getting it for the right reasons (never do it for the sake of peer pressure).
As some posters have already mentioned, people will judge you, and even it you don't like them, sometimes you need their cooperation (particularly employers). Also, I'd hate to imagine having a nose ring when a cold or an allergy comes round.
Another important thing to consider is the possibility of you yourself changing over time. If I quit videogames one day, I'd hate to have a Nintendo logo tattooed across my chest, and if I gave up metal and became a devout Catholic, I'd hate to have an inverted cross with devil horns going down my arm.

I love bod mods and have plenty of my own, both piercings and tattoos (I'm very sad that I don't have my lip pierced anymore :[). I've considered scarification and branding but I doubt I'd ever do it. Even so I've seen some pretty badass designs for both. Same goes with the tongue-splitting, looks awesome, but I definitely don't have to guts to do it myself. The only one that makes me fully cringe is the whole corset piercing idea, not entirely sure why, but just *shiver* it looks awesome but still...

It depends.

With Tattoos, I personally think... Keep them simple. Small things, recognizable and disguisable. Because no matter how cool or intricate a design is, nine times out of ten it just looks like a big smudge on your forearm. They can occasionally look sweet though.

Piercings, sure, they can be okay. Overdoing it, again, looks lame, I think. Minimalism helps.

I don't care if people have piercings or tattoos. To each their own. but if they are an asshole it is not because of how they look.
The only problem is if they meet my dad. He is very conservative and uptight with any type of piercing or tattoo no matter in what taste it is in.Which is very annoying because a quarter of my friends do have visable tattoos and are fantastic good people to be with but he won't be able to look beyond that.
I do have plans to get at least one tattoo and it will be this:

See I happen to think that is in a way rather beautiful and as for the penis piercing I have one, not as intrusive or painful as you might think and at the end of the day it will close up if removed!.

Out of interest what exactly are the benefits of a penis piercing (assuming you aren't joking)? Surely only a select few people will ever see it and doesn't it get in the way while you're doing the act itself?

OT: Tattoos can look good if they're not generic, I haven't got any myself and probably never will as they wouldn't suit my look plus I don't know if I could decide on a design I'd be happy with. Piercings depend on where they are but are generally okay, the other stuff though does seem kinda weird although people have the right to do whatever they want to their bodies.

I have plenty of tattoos and i'm all for them but I seriously hate the argument "they are going to look crap when your skin is all saggy" yeah that might be the case but i'm sure as hell not going to look attractive anymore when my skin starts sagging anyway so I dont see the issue haha, you're not going to look good when you get old so it's silly to have that mindset

I don't care what other people do to their body. Sometimes it looks really good, and I appreciate it. But people have different aesthetic tastes than I do, and I accept this.
The one thing I HATE about this topic is the whole "You'll look great as long as your skin doesn't age!" shit. You know what? If someone has a tattoo, they either thought of that, or don't care. I can't stand people being obnoxious about what people want to do to their own body.
