This is a stimulated problem solving exercise. It raises a host of values and issues which the student must atempt to work through in a rational manner. This exercise is a very dramatic example of how our values differ and we often have trouble listening to people whose beliefs are different from your own

READ THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH:
"You are members of a department in Washington D.C., that is in charge of experimental stations in the far outposts of civilization. Suddenly the Third World War breaks out. Places all across the globe are being destroyed. People are heading for whatever fallout shelters are available. Your group recieves a desperate call froom one of your experimental stations, asking for help. It seems there are ten people that have shown up at this particular fallout shelter. There is only enough space, air, food, and water for six people for a period of 3 months- which is how long they estimate they can safely stay down there. They realize that if they have to decide among themselves which six should stay in the shelter, they are likely to become irrational and begin fighting. So they have decided to call your department, and leave the decision to you. They will abide by your decision. But each of you have to quickly get ready to go down to your own fallout shelter. So all you have time for is to get superficial descriptions of the ten people. Then you'll have to go to your own shelter. Before you begin, I want to impress upon you one important consideration. It is entirely possible that the six people you choose to stay in the shelter might be the only six people left to start the human race over again.

1. A 16 year old white girl if questionable I.Q.; high school dropout; pregnant

2. Policeman with a gun; thrown off the force for police brutality

3. A clergyman; 79 years old

4. A 36 year old female physician; is a confirmed racist

5. A 46 year old female singer; served 7 years for pushing narcotics; has been out of jail for 3 months

6. A 20 year old black male militant; second year medical student

7. A 15 year old hispanic boy; honors student

8. A male architect; homosexual

9. A 26 year old male law student

10. The law student's 25 year old wife; spent last nine months in a mental hospital; still heavily sedated; they refuse to be separated

KEEPING:
1- Female, Already pregnant
4- Female, doctor, can get over racism
5- Female, street smart, possibly not addicted
6- Male, military background, doctor
7- Male, book smart
8- Male, can get over homosexuality

NOT KEEPING:
2- Could accidentally kill someone
3- Too old, cannot reproduce, useless
9- Not worth his wife
10- Crazy and useless

Keep 1, 2, 4, 5, 9, 10. That's an ideal ratio for males/females to reproduce heavily. The second male (the one without the insane wife) I chose because he's not too old for sex, won't have tension with the racst, isn't gay, and is the most physically fit.

No need for a clergymen at any time, and like you said he's a tad too old (He CAN still reproduce, though.) The policeman does have background problems so he'd be too much of a risk. A crazy lady wouldn't be good to have around and, since the guy won't leave her, he can be left out too. Besides, who needs our shit law system after a nuclear apocalypse.

I'd prefer to keep the 16 year old girl out. Stupidity is a horrible thing. We don't need any more of that.

The racist Physician would be a problem to work in conjunction with the black medical student, but doctors would be the most useful if the goal is to survive after an apocalypse. Hopefully the racism would be overcome, or the racist would end up being killed in some way or another.

The singer has no valuable skill to present. Hopefully she's also been clean for 7 years.

Hispanic boy... He's educated. Yay?

Architect. He might be able to help with the layout of the shelter if it gets damaged in some way(like he could show where the best places to repair are or whatever.) His sexuality has nothing to do with anything.

That's all of it. Personally, I'd let everyone everywhere die, but I'm a cynic so...

Basically, everyone who's female. Plus the young guy and crazy lady's wife.

I'd give them instructions to get busy and make babies.

What difference does it make? They will all fight and kill eachother in a desperate attempt to get in. It's called survival instinct or panic. But, if I have to choose:

1. successful reproducer
4. racist, but we'll need a doctor
6. knows how to fight and has some medical training
7. intelligent
8. knows how to build stuff, very important skill
I won't choose a sixth because the others will most likely only reduce the groups odds of survival.

To bad the human race needs a minimum of about 80 people to succesfully reproduce the species without inbreeding. So even if they are the last six it would not suffice. So in my decision the whole "reproduction" thing is canceled out.

3,4,5,6,7,8.

Not keeping 1,2,9,10.

A group that has some knowledge of a bit of everything, so general survival skills. Enough to at least contact other people. If they can't then they are doomed anyway.
