I'd have to recomend The Dark Tower series by Stephen King or, if you're really into scifi, the Sprawl Trilogy by William Gibson

How about the Otherland serie (1996)? It's not quite a-class literature... More the contrary, but it has an interesting base concept.
In the future (half a century or something) the internet has become some kind of higly interactive Virtual Reality network, manifested as a sort of metropolis, with buildings representing sites. Wealthy peoply can connect neurologicaly (MMOs have never been so addicting), whilst the people with not so swollen wallets use VR-goggels. Ofcourse the poo hits the servers and things go wrong, but in small ways, so that the regular populace doesn't notice it.
If I try to say anything more, I'll probably be making some severe spoilers.

All by James Clavell. A must read for all lovers of historical fiction. Shogun takes place in feudal Japan; Gai Jin in colonial Japan; Tai Pan and Noble House deal with the growth and development of the island of Hong Kong; Whirlwind is set in 1979 Iran. They are all pretty thick, and sometimes you have to turn back to check and make sure you are/are not in a flashback, but the plot twists, character depth and development, and intricate point and counterpoint between rivals make them 5 of the ultimate pieces of historical fiction.
