Like WWII?

Try "Into the Darkness". A wonderful 'alternate reality' take on WWII. (Harry Turtledove)

I'll also suggest "The View from the Mirror" series. (Ian Irvine)

Also, as others here may suggest, try the "Discworld" series. (Series? Maybe its just the universe... Wikipedia it)

Oryx and Crake by: Margaret Atwood is incredible. It is about a dystopic future riddled with genetic engineering that essentially leads to the end of "humanity". EASILY my favourite book.

Well, Douglas Adam is very good for Sci-fi, though it's more funny-philosophical then dark.

And Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" Series is fantasy...and very "Deep", and hilarious.

'Dune' by Frank Herbert is good. And of course for fantasy there is 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy by Tolkien
.

The Black Company series by Glen Cook is one of the finest Fantasy series I've ever read, as is Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. Brian Weeks' Night Angel Trilogy is also pretty good stuff.

Dark Fantasy? Now you're in my alley and talkin'. Read 'Hawkmoon' by Michael Moorcock. Heck, read anything by Moorcock. I'm reading 'Corum: The Prince in the Scarlet Robe' right now, and it is awesome.

The Man who was Thursday by GK Chesterton was pretty good. I read it because it featured in part in Deus Ex

Button, Button is a collection of short stories by Richard Matheson (the guy who wrote the I Am Legend novel)

Dune-just read it. I don't need to say anything. Just read it.

Vampire Hunter D is a story about a vampire hunter named D who is a total badass in the year 12,016 AD.

I think "Douglas Adams" covers sci-fi if your in need of a chuckle.

But if you want some really mind-boggling sci-fi that gets you thinking, look for "Roadside Picnic". Its the book that the game STALKER is (sort of) based on and its very good (if a little mind bogglind)

Anything by Anne Rice. My personal favourites are Interview with the vampire, The vampire Lestat, The Queen of the damned, and The vampire Armand.
