As a fellow writer, I can say the worst thing you're doing here is being too conventional. Try to read things that don't catch your fancy, you never know what you'll find.

I do ^^ i have read tons of books I would never dream of, becouse my friends and family liked them, including Viktoria by Knut Hamsun, the book is supposed to be the best lovestory written after shakespear, it was rubbish if you ask me but I learn quite a bit about literature ^^

Dispite being right into fantasy fiction I've never read the LOTR books. I read The Hobit in high school and didn't like it so I never bothered with LOTR. After seeing the movies I wanted to read the books but quickly lost that enthusisam when I realised already knowing the majority of the plot I'd rather sped my reading time on something else. I might get to them one day, but not any time soon.

As my screen name and avatar probably give away, I'm a big Warhammer 40k nerd so I read a lot of 40k fiction. Dan Abnett and Sandy Mitchell write some very entertaining stuff.

As for more traditional fantasy fiction I'll just list the first three I think of.

1. I enjoyed most of David Gemmells books
2. Raymind E. Feists' Riftwar Saga and Empire Trilogy
3. David Eddings has a lot of enjoyable stuff

I like me my existentialist fiction. Not necessarily my three favorite books of all time, but they are all excellent works and The Moviegoer is nothing short of sublime.

Favorite books eh?

-Anything with Bill Bryson's name on it.

-Anything written by Phillip K. Dick

-Any of Harry Turtledove's Alternative History.

-Just about any nonfiction that focuses on the American Colonial period or on the time between the Paris 1919 to 1939. (I find those two time periods fascinating for reasons I don't really understand.)

-The works of Peter F. Hamilton that are set in the Commonwealth Universe. Currently then include Pandora's Star, Judas Unchained, The Dreaming Void, and The Temporal Void.

That's all I can think of right now.

If you want a good fantasy series, read the His Dark Materials trilogy. It's still my favorite fiction series, and I'm patiently waiting for Noble Collection to finish work on their replica Alethiometer.

Infact I have read that triology and I must say I Loved it, it was very original, and that is one thing many fantasy books miss!

Favourite books... The only books I truly love are the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. The best series I have ever read in my life and I'm only two thirds of the way through the second book.
