After playing borderlands 2 for a bit, it seems like it's story is a little darker than it's predecessor. In the second game, the presence of the huge company hyperion, has more of an impact on the gamers, especially when you hear and witness some of the atrocities the company is capable of.

The first's story wasn't much though. I loved the game, but the story was "find vault, get disappointed, go home" The second was much darker no doubt.

What occurs at the Hyperion Wildlife Preserve and when you meet Angel in person, shows this clearly.

Also, the backgrounds of Tiny Tina and the new Vault Hunters are pretty dark

Well, the thing is, the first Borderlands didn't have much of a story to be dark about. There were some dark moments (Tannis' background and the implied acts of the various gangs, for instance), but the game didn't explore those themes. The sequel delves a lot more into the game world and the characters and the dark themes come out more.

The whole point of the game's setting is that it's insane. Nearly every person is literally insane (or mentally unstable) to some degree, with the difference between the good guys and the bad guys being mostly in how much that insanity manifests in psychotic killing sprees of innocent people. The game starts out playing that insanity for laughs, but as it progresses the laughs sometimes stop. Take Tiny Tina's origin story - the undertext of hillarious insanity and comic disregard for human life is still in there, but the personal suffering is put forward and suddenly the joke isn't funny anymore. Also, the character that you might have found hillarious or annoying suddenly seems tragic. Tina isn't like she is because she's a crazy brat, she's like that because of what happened to her. Same thing applies to Tannis to a degree as well.

The first game had these things mostly implied or downplayed, but they were still there if you looked for them. The sequel relies on this turnabout a lot more, making what is funny about the game suddenly seem horrific, and personally I think it's a good thing. Shakes the whole setting up a bit.

Yeah the second game is definitely darker.
It's not macabre, or even depressing really, but it has a handful of 'stab you in the heart' moments that contrast a little too well with the other wise goofy and fun atmosphere.

Everything is depressing in the game. Even the jokes seem macabre after a while.

Brick has turned to "violence to respond to violence" to stay sane
Mordicai is drinking... especially after the Nature Preserve (and who could blame him?)
Roland is apologizing for everything, shouldering all the blame on himself
Lilith is going insane from Eridium exposure
Tannis is retreating even further into that already neurologically damaged brain of hers

Hell, the only people not going loco are Moxxi (the whole sado-masochistic thing really helps there) and Mr. Krabs (Since... well... he's Mr. Krabs, as long as he's rich, who cares?)

Everything is weird, especially Tannis. They basically asked "I wonder what would happen if we took a scientist with full blown Asperger's Syndrome, with a bit of Anti-Social Anxiety Disorder thrown in, tossed her onto the hellhole we created, and recorded the results?"
I don't think Tannis is getting worse, if you listen to her tapes she goes from puking at somebody calling her pretty to beginning to like being round other people.

I think the only reason the second 1 seems darker is the story is easier to follow, in the first game 95% of all the quest context was text and who could be bothered to read all that when shootin' n lootin' was to be done?

In the second one almost all quest context is spoken, so you can follow it more easily and so you're more aware of it.

I do like how the second one is so closely tied to the second, like how you can pick up a tape where Jack is telling Angel what to say when you're on the bus.

I do find it odd though that the previous 4 vault hunters combined were beaten by jack but us in the second one can defeat him by our lonesome, keeping in mind how powerful we could make our previous vault hunters.

Well let's consider what has passed since our powering up of our favorite four shall we. Lilith: Ever since the opening of the vault and the release of Eridium, her powers have been out of whack. She looses control of her abilities or they don't work to the extent that she wants them too (i.e; teleporting of you to the enemy base) and she wears down a lot when using them.

Brick: Since the opening of the vault, he has tried to settle down, get a puppy in memory of his first, but since the arrival of Hyperion, Brick lost his puppy, and did somethings that got him to section off from the rest of the famous four. With all that has happened to him in depression and rage, he started up his own gang of bandits (really just anyone who wants to join).

Roland: From what I have gathered, Roland just sort of took leader ship of the Crimson lance, causing him to become more of a desk worker allowing his skills to rust up in the war room.

Mordecai: Dated Moxxi, got into heavy drinking...not much else gathered....
