Hey ladies and gentlemen.
Many people have been wondering: Is Borderlands any good? If you want a simple answer to the question, then yes. If you would like a more long winded review, then keep on reading.
Ironically, Lilith and the Hunter were the first two characters I used.
Borderlands is set world were Fallout 3 and Red Faction met. The cell shaded world is both fun and a fresh breath of air from all the gritty, heavely textured games of today. The world is fun, but not totally an open world. I would say it's more of Red Faction type world in which the different parts are broken up. To get to the next bit of open world, you push a button to teleport you there! Woo!
Oopsie, I just said Fallout 3 in my review of Borderlands, I guess that leaves the readers with another question: How do Borderlands and Fallout 3 compare?
Well, I would say that they don't compare. Fallout 3's entire atmosphere was dark and gritty. Borderlands' game reaks of fun. Borderlands is a game that tries not to take itself too seriously. Some of the enemy characters have the hilarious title of "Badass" stapled onto their names. This, coupled with hilarious talking robots really make the game a little less threatening and a little more entertaining.
Borderlands intially set you up as one of four characters. Each character has their own weapon specialties and their own special ability which is activated once you reach level 5.
Leveling up is actually rather easy and after only 3 hours of gameplay, I was at level 10. I wasn't even level grinding, I was just playing through the game.
Borderlands gives you a skill point each time you level up. This skill point will be spent on the skill branch of your choosing so that you may reach one of three ultimate skills.
I've been using Lilith, and in order to get to her elemental skill, I must go through the "sub branches" to get to the elemental skill branch. I still have a ways to go until I get there, but the sub skills are very useful and if you want success in the game, you had better pick a skill suited to your style of gameplay.
Speaking of gameplay, the game plays quite well, the the exceptions of a few bumps here and there. If you're looking for a story in Borderlands, well there isn't really much of a story. Appareantly, you're supposed to find a tomb of great treasure, I'm level 14 and have thus far not heard a word about the tomb or its location. But considering it's still early (?), I'll just say I need to be a higher level in order to access the main quest.
It's a game of mission after mission, which isn't a bad thing! The missions are sometimes funny, like one I had in which I had to slay a beast and find a guy's fake leg.
Anywho, if you're the kind of player who just loves to level up and kill high level enemies, then this game is your ticket to happiness.
The vehicles in the game don't really control that well, but the vehicles are always good to moosh your enemies with. The funny thing about making roadkill out of enemies is that you don't even have to be doing fast, not only that, but enemies will generally make no attempt to get out of the way. I backed over and killed a level 12 Skag be accident, I was going about 2 1/2 mph. I was also only a level 8 when I did this, so vehicles are a ticket for easy kills, but only if you run people over.
The machine gun and the rocket launcher on the vehicle are fairly terrible. I was in the gunner seat shooting a "Badass Raider" from about 5 feet away, the machine was so terribly inaccurate that I finally gave up and just ran him over instead.
The rocket launcher does almost no surround damage, meaning that it doesn't have the grenage effect of blast radius, so if your rocket launcher shot isn't dead on the enemy, you won't be doing much/any damage.
The weapons on the game are a fun way for me to channel all my agression into the game. This game pulls the old, "same weapon, different stats" deal. Meaning a pistol of the exact same name, shape and design may do 22 and 24 damage. This leads the player on the never ending quest of finding the perfect gun. It's not a bad system, but it can get a little frustrating later in the game when you start to spend money on better weapons (and occasionally find better weapons.)
Overall, Borderlands was WELL worth the money I spent on it. I'll be continuing the game tomorrow and will probably play through as each character.
Hope ya'll enjoyed it!
::UPDATE::
I'm now at level 20, yes I do level up fast. I hate to say it, but I'm still not even sure if I'm on the story missions or not yet. So far, I've found Borderlands to be a level up and run game. I'm sure I'll find a story somewhere, but for all intensive purposes, I'm still just doing missions that serve the purpose of leveling me up.
Also, be careful where you jump. The game does still a few bugs, mainly ones with Lilith when she's in invisible mode. I phased through a pole, unphased and got stuck. I had to kill myself.
Not a big deal, but just watch out.
