I started playing as Roland (Soldier) because someone told me he's the most balanced. I stuck with his specialized weapons for a bit, but now I use a revolver, sniper, and SMG.
My question is this. Do you play with the weapon suggestions, if so, why? Does it help in the long run?

I don't.
Using Mordecai, shotty is Lvl.19 proficiency, sniper is Lvl.13. Everything else is around 6-10.
And my over-powered Bloodwing is better then any gun I have.

EDIT: Thanks, guy who quoted me but name I forgot quickly for pointing out my mistake.
Shame on you others for not noticing.
Shame on you.

Well the skills you put points into kinda go off a certain type of weapon, like the soldier guy(forget his name) gets bonuses with shotguns and assault rifles. Soo unless you avoid taking any of those weapon specific skills you might want to invest in them.

I have been playing co-op with Roland with a friend and started out with shotguns and combat rifles speccing into his damage trees. But I soon found out I hated combat rifles and loved SMGs as I had fallen in love with Lilith and her SMGs. So I gave Roland a SMG and Specced him into support and healing. I feel like I do better damage now because of the SMG and its impossible to take us down now with all my healing. I figure I would do the same with Brick if I played him. So no, I don't really worry about what weapons they are built for.

Yes, I have a class mod and strategically placed skill points that lets my level 35 Hunter kick ass. Bloodwing attacks ten times before swooping back. He dazes enemies, and it takes 3 seconds for his ability to recharge. In otherwords, endless deathbringing bloodwing. I broke the game.

I balanced mine out till about Lvl 30 then I realised Bloodwing destroys everything.
So that's where all my points are going now. And that skill he has of getting enemies to drop loot is a good send on Playthrough 2.

I like using a little bit of everything. For a long time I had a combat rifle for Mordecai that shot a 97.5 accuracy 3 round burst with some crazy recoil dampening. It was so easy to just pop 9 rounds into a badass or badmutha anything and walk away with crazy critical damage.

Using SMGs as Lilith certainly helps, her mods can increase thier damage by 40% and they are very powerful at most ranges.

Some of the revolvers are mighty but it's rare you find one that can take anyone down as fast as a Hellfire SMG.

It seems obvious to me.

Roland - Assault Rifles/whatever's handy
Lilith - SMG's/whatever's handy
Mordacai - Sniper Rifles/Revolvers
Brick - Launchers/Shotguns.

This is based on the fact that the classes either have class mods that directly contribute to the effectiveness of the weapons (in the case of lilith) or because the skill trees directly affect the listed weapons.

I play the soldier with a support rifle(automatic combat rifle).

This works fine because of abilities that increase combat rifle damage and accuracy, the only problem is that I use a(for me) rare weapon type(automatic rifle) and need an even rarer combination of firing speed and accuracy since I refuse to use any automatic weapon with less than 85% accuracy and 8.0 firing speed.(this limits me to a specific set of item components and the Vladov manufacturer)

Before New Game + most revolvers could one-shot critical almost everything except heavy armoured targets and the 'elite' versions.(tow-shotting those) During NG+, well, I can't see anyone surviving without a fast automatic weapon or some extremely overpowered ability.(which excludes 90% of all weapons in the game)

Roland is the Soldier.. he has a turret.

Mordecai is the Hunter, he has the bloodwing....?

You have clearly not yet used his Bloodlust skill.

Finally.. I use Moredecai and focus on Snipers/Revolvers. Scope or go home.

It can't hurt to think outside the box with the characters. For instance Lillith and Mordecai can be frighteningly effective with shotguns and mashers due to their accuracy buffs.
The shotguns in Borderlands are odd beasts. Having class abilities that increase accuracy will decrease the spread of the shotguns, which in the case of someone like Mordecai. and to a lesser degree Lillith. means you'll have a shotgun that is practically shooting slugs. Interestingly enough, Roland's Scattershot ability is actually quite useless since it increases the spread of the shotguns and since the shotguns do per pellet damage, it only makes sense that you want the spread of the shotguns to be as tight as possible to ensure as many pellets hit at once.

Similiarly, Brick is actually quite capable of using damn near any weapon he pleases since his explosion enhancing abilities like Endowed and his Blast Master class mod will increase the damage of any weapon he has equipped that deals explosive elemental damage. Having +50% damage from Revenge, at least +40% from your class mod, and then another +12% from endowed turns any gun you're holding into a tactical nuke.

I believe Roland's recommended weapons are combat rifles and shotguns with elemental effects other than explosive. I used combat rifles for a while but got sick of them, especially once I got my hands on the Combustion Hellfire smg and Blast Hammer shotgun (and a sweet commando mod). The only other character I've played is Brick, whose only specialty is explosive weapons and rocket launchers. I haven't noticed much of a difference.

OK People, gather round and brace for impact!

Lilith here! I like to make Lilith use the weapons she specializes in: Elemental weapons and SMGs.

I hate the combat rifles, they feel big, awkward and clunky, with half arsed, unsatisfying sound effects.

They kind of go 'futhuthum futhuthumm', instead of 'bangbangbang' The recoil makes it feel like your 360 is spazzing out on you.

I was lucky enough to find a Hellfire SMG at the start of playthrough 2, and it was my main weapon right till the end, nothing could outdo it for sheer damage per second.

I try and have a mix. A shotgun, scoped revolver, launcher, sniper rifle. Use whatever depending on what I'm attacking.
