Borderlands: GOTY Edition

I just got the GOTY Edition of Borderlands. Question however: should I play through the DLC during the main story, or after I've beaten it?

And another thing, does anyone know where I could catch up with new players? Most of my steam friends have already blown through the game, and I'd like to play with someone at my stage in the game.

I'd say after. There is some stuff that doesnt really fit if you jump there straight away.
