Need some help. Just got the game, but if I want to play online, I need Gamespy. First off, that sucks, because Gamespy is useless.

Second, I bought the retail version. Because of the Gamespy requirement, does this mean I can't play with my friends who bought the Steam version?

Any insight on whether or not I can play with my friends would be appreciated.

Every PC version of the game uses gamespy, even the steam version. So they're all compatable.

the gamespy aspect is not like regular gamespy. you put in a user name etc and its good to go, no extra installs or anything like that. when i first got it i also was like, oh noes gamespy crap. but after playing on lan i decided to sign up. far less hassles than you would think. enjoy it sir :D

Nope, you all log into GS with your accounts you make there and then just play. You will probably want to send friend invites to each though. Things used to be REALLY bad with needed to port forward a shit-ton of things only to have it only half work. Last few times I've played, there hasn't been any issues to speak of. I do use Hamachi to circumvent GameSpy most of the time. Maybe the virtual LAN is making things work easier than doing a straight online game and I've forgotten that I've not been playing online.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I have both the retail and steam since the steam version has achievements and I trust steam more then I trust 2k for the dlc

I honestly just use GameRanger to bipass Gamespy. Hell I didn't even get to play on gamespy because when Borderlands was first released it was literally impossible to play on multiplayer! Gameranger was the only way around it, thankfully that works for me

You can play with your Steam Friends. And you can play without GameSpy, should that bug out for you as it does for me and my Comrade. There is no network technical reason why any game made available on the PC would not be able to communicate with another copy. Unless we are talking anti-piracy measures, which do not apply here.

... ah, before I forget: Tunngle is a lightweight and easy to use alternative to using GameSpy. If you need more information 'bout that just toss me a message.
