Ok, if you haven't beaten Borderlands first playthrough yet, or just don't want it spoiled, I would stop here, because most of the games story is displayed here.
So, recently, I finished my first playthrough of Borderlands, and I'm really stuck here. I can't decide whether or not this game is actually good.
You see, when I first started playing, I was astounded. Cool weapons, cool customization (to a degree), and everything worked pretty well. I got around 3/5 of the way through before my discomfort started in. I had always assumed that the quests I were doing were just small bits of a bigger plot. I mean, I had read the quest text to a degree, but I honestly didn't consider the quest text for the main plot to be a story because of how TERRIBLE it was. I figured soon enough I'd find some revolutionary clue about the vault, and the real action would start. This is about when I got to the Baron. I find out he has the "last piece of the vault key", and was shocked. I'm almost to the end part of the game, and the story is this under developed? I figured "well at least the ending will be nice!".
You see, one of my main reasons I liked Borderlands was the guns. The minute my first Eridian weapon dropped. I was beyond happiness, and ran around shooting giant purple death at anything that moved. So I assumed one thing was waiting for me at the end of the game, something I'd learned from other RPGs:
EPIC L00TZ.
I had this idea that I would get to grab a couple of sweet Eridian Weapons, an awesome artifact, or a shield.
This is where I finally finished the game. I was dissappointed with the story, but I still thought it was a good game, and if I could get just one more gun that shot awesome super purple death from the vault, I would have been fine.
I get to the last boss, and as the cutscene ensues, I get ready for an epic battle.
Wanna know how I won?
Spamming Sniper Bullets in it's mouth like there was no tommorow.
Some of the bosses had a bit of strategy. You had to run from the dogs Nine Toes would send while shooting, stay away from Sledge so his shotgun can't get you, the Rakk Hive... well I just spammed Sniper Bullets again, but at least the boss you get your Eridian weapon from is challenging. I didn't even take damage the whole last boss fight! I kill him, credits ensue, and I'm awestruck.
THATS THE ENDING? REALLY?
That wasn't even decent! Then, I have to go through the entire credit screen, which I think was just put there to make us insane. Don't put a 10 minute unskippable credit roll right after the end without telling us what happend!
The credits end, and I'm still a bit excited. Maybe he dropped the awesome weapons? Maybe I get to enter the real vault now. And then, thanks to that stupid guardian angel, I find out that no, there is no real prize. Congratulations, you did all this stupid crap for the good of a world inhabited by crazy people, bandits, and jerks. Why couldn't I have just taken all the Claptraps and bombed the god-forsaken place?
But then, hope! A quest! Maybe I'll get my epic weapons now?
And... more money. To buy more guns. To use to get more good guns. At the end of the second play through.
So, a TLDR: The game started so well, had so much potential, then pulled a jerk move like that. Is Gearbox stupid or something? Didn't they realize that maybe, just maybe, we'd want something GOOD from treasure hunting? My character spouted lines the whole time as though he only cared about himself, yet he did this for the good of people?
