Ok so Im going to start a 4 player co-op with some friends in borderlands, so i thought to make sure no arguments start, or people feel cheated etc that i will write up a pact that everyone has to follow when playing the game in terms of who gets what loot. I remember playing many many rpg's where people like to go crazy and grab as much loot as they can befor the other players can, in fact leaving us open to die just to get the better loot.

(no im sure we wont have a problem playing the game, but this is a just in case thing, people have been killed over in-game loot befor, not about to let it happend in my game XD :p)

So im posting this for 2 reasons, 1 to see if other people think this is a good idea (and if the way ive done it is any good) and 2 if you do think this is a good idea and CBF comming up with it yourself, you can feel free to steal this one XD I tried to make the pact based on players skills and what will be useful for them.

Basically each class has 2 weapon types that they always get first picks from, once they have had their picks loot is free to grab for the rest of the party^

Hunter: Sniper and Pistols (not revolvers)
Soldier: Shotguns and Assault Rifles
Brick: Launchers and Revolvers
Siren: SMG's and elemental weapons*
Alien weapons free for all^

*lilith has to drop the weapon that she has equipped that the loot weapon will be replacing, the receiver of this loot is the class in which the loot weapons preference is (e.g. if it is an elemental shotgun in the loot lilith gets 1st pick, but the soldier gets whatever weapon Lilith has equipped that the shotgun will be replacing)
Obviously if it is an elemental SMG Lilith doesn't have to drop anything.

^After preferences have been worked out, the loot is free to grab. If at this point 2 people want the same weapon, the people compare the weapons they want to replace and who has the worst weapon gets the loot, but drops the replaced weapon for the other player as compensation.

EDIT: OMG people read the damn skill trees, the hunters skills are for revolvers and pistols, but seeing as it would be un-fair to give 1 class 3 weapon picks, I went with pistols. why? because to make the hunter more rounded, giving him a single shot high damage weapon and a faster firing but lower damage weapon.(also for reasons below about the brick)

Soldier has 2 skills which focus on the shotgun and combat rifle, that is why he gets those.

The Bricks explosives is obvious but the reason for revolvers is because later on you can get the multishot revolvers which are more or less like more accurate shotguns, so it was an obvious choice in giving these to brick as the solider already gets the shotgun skills.

Remember the characters will have 4 weapon slots to play with, this means that they are NOT just limited to those 2 weapons, the hunter can pick up a revolver and use it, it is just the brick will get first pick. The soldier can use a SMG or a Sniper, but the other classes get first pick of the loot, that is all. Nothing stopping people using those weapons.

The strategy that's always worked for me is that there's an order randomly determined. When loot is found, it's the "first's" choice, but if he refuses, it goes to the second, and so on. If all people refuse, it's basically free game to pick up for cash. If the person takes it, they go back to the end of the order.

I've always been of the opinion that if I am playing with friends then I shouldn't have to set up a loot system. Common sense should just prevail.

P1: You need this rifle?
P2: Sure, it's a little better than that I have
P3: Actually could I have that, it's a lot better than what I have.
P1: Sure.
P2: Sure.

Happy happy joy joy ^^

Of course this all falls to pieces if you are playing with randoms. Good luck though, 4 player borderlands sounds awesome.

Wouldn't work for me as a Brick. I usually just go with shotgun and melee. So... rockets and revolvers wouldn't help me much =P. Also when playing with friends, don't they usually ask if anyone wants the loot in question?

I dunno about the repeaters for the hunter, he is specialized in Snipers and Revolvers... but I would say that common sense and gaming style would be another factor for the loot pact. It would be a lot easier to talk about who gets what, depending on how they play/what they put talents in during the game. So, either roll a D20 for loot, highest roll wins, or talk about it when/before starting the adventure to find the Vault =P

Yeah I'm not sure you've got proper weapon assignments here...

Soldier will do better with repeaters and combat rifles due to his ammo regeneration abilities
Hunter does better with snipers and revolvers (look at his gunslinger branch)
Brick definitely uses Launchers, but he should have Shotguns too because he is a close-combat specialist

Also, are you really going to play a 4-player co-op with each person playing a different class?

What's wrong with a Need/Greed system? It works well enough. If a weapon is an upgrade over their current gear, they 'need' it, if no one 'needs' it, then you just greed it, generally with a Round Robin system so everyone gets a bit of loot.

Soldier has shotgun (scattershot) and combat rifle (assualt) skills that is why i gave them to him.
Hunters gunslinger skills (If you look at them) are for PISTOLS AND REVOLVERS.
Brick doesnt get shotguns as he doesnt have any skills to make it stronger, but to make up for that I gave him revolvers, which, with the mutlishot versions you get later on, are just as goos as shotguns in close combat situations and is a good replacment.

and yes, why would we double up on characters, it is more fun having everyone different.

Seems like a pretty good system, although I do disagree with the Hunter not getting first dibs on revolvers. Revolvers tend to be way more effective in the hands of a Hunter than a repeater does. With this in mind, I'd more likely give the Siren a repeater, since they have a higher tendency of being elemental weapons, as well as having a fire rate matching that of the Siren's overall speed.

That said, I would also give the Berserker dibs on shotguns. His huge amount of health allows him to get pretty up close and personal with enemies, making him a very good character to hand a shotgun to. Giving the shotgun to the Berserker does cut out the possibility of the Soldier getting dibs on them. I'd probably fix this by simply doing a quick check of the fire rate on the shotgun. If it's got a fast fire rate, I'd hand it over to the Soldier, since he needs a much faster fire rate to survive, but if it was a little slower on the trigger, the Berserker could probably make better use of it, considering just how much damage he can actually take.

Otherwise, I'd just handle any other disputes with a duel. Whoever wins, gets the weapon.

I have a level 50 Soldier and he carries combat rifle, repeater, revolver and eridian gun. I hardly ever use the revolver or the eridian gun because the others are far more effective in his hands. Revolvers center around accuracy, taking the time to line up a shot and going for the head. They are much more deadly in the hands of a Hunter.

Soldiers with ammo regen are amazing. I have a 158 damage repeater pistol that, with all of my bonuses, has a 103 round clip. I can empty it in 4 seconds and the ammo regenerates shortly thereafter.

Any class can use shotguns, but the Brick class is most likely to be at close range, and as such it's only natural for them to use it. But, do what you want. The fun part of the game comes from experimenting. It's not just about class abilities, but the character's play style in general.
