Despite what everybody is saying the game is PERFECTLY playable solo. I played through it probably 3 times solo. Don't really understand all the people saying it's unplayable without friends.
Not unplayable solo, just way more fun with friends. My buddy and I had a blast riding separate vehicles around the wastelands, shooting at enemies. Plus, all the comical parts are that much funnier when your friend(s) are there to share them with you.

I have to agree with you there. I played the whole game twice by myself, I still loved it, but it was totally different playing with a friend and I had a blast. The retorts the characters give to each other is one of the best things about playing co-op.

OT: I love that game, and I can gush all day long about it, but I will just say it's a lot of fun and hits that loot seeking itch just perfectly. Plus all the characters are really great and the bosses actually make you work for the effort for what you're trying to do, well, except for one.

Depends. Do you have any friends who also own the game? If so, get it for the same console they do - co-op is a blast, though a bit less of one at 300 ping. If not, wait for a sale - it's a great game, but there's some obvious creases. In the first fifteen minutes, whether it's the good parts or the bad that stick out to you more will make or break your overall experience with the game. Personally, I love it despite having no friends, but that's just me.

Or if you can wait a few months, Borderlands 2 (by most accounts I've heard so far) is a heck of a lot better than Borderlands 1 - particularly in the area of PC porting, if you plan to play it on PC. Borderlands was a pretty obvious console port - bad (but still mostly usable) menus, FoV fixed at an annoyingly small number...

You have to love quirky weapons.

I played as a siren in single player (mostly), including the Zombie Island DLC. I personally found it amazing, but it will get old quick if you're expecting a solid story or characterisation.

Borderlands is... terrible. Visually it's nice that they went with the cell-shaded look, but they made it the cell shaded version of the same brownshooter everyone else makes these days. They say it has "rpg elements." No it doesn't, it's just a fps. Some of the guns are crappy is all. A quarter of the way thru you have guns good enough to get you thru the game, and leveling gets you... nothing really. Quicker regenerating health or shields... the inclusion of which makes the character an unstoppable killing machine as long as there's a convenient corner or chest-high wall to hide behind for a second (hint... there are.) Oh I guess you can regen bullets too... but after getting all the magazine upgrades money is worthless too (can't buy anything because you always FIND better stuff than offered) so refilling bullets is just something you do at every vending machine (because there's nothing else to do with money.) You lose money if you die... so there's no real punishment for death. The driving is terrible and the cars explode if you hit so much as a flea at the wrong angle. And there are about 6 kinds of mob you fight... and you will fight those 6 mobs over and over until the big
Cthulhu
fight at the end.

That being said, they included splitscreen multiplayer. With real friends (like in the room with you, not just facebook friends) it is fun, and nobody includes splitscreen anymore. It's a worthless, crappy game that I've logged many, many, drunken (best way to play Borderlands) hours having a blast with my friends playing.

It's like eating an entire loaf of plain white bread. Nothing special, nothing interesting, very samey and bland, but there's nothing particularly wrong or broken about it and I just kept munching away until I was done.

Well in short it's Diablo FPS edition, not the crappy MMO/diablo that old good one.
It's pretty shallow but a great blast of an adventure with lots of mobs and loots and areas to explore, made at least 5x better with friends, also you might want to skip the last boss because it kinda shits on the rest of the game.

Get the GOTY Edition if you can. All the DLC's are solid.
I second this as well.
I've logged more hours solo than co-op easily.
I enjoy it because there's no silly story I have to try an remember from last time I played, and it's NEVER a case of loading up the game after a long hiatus and realizing I had NO idea what I was doing last and start over like almost all other games are for me.

The game is a lot better with friends like the other posters mention. The amount of pranks you can pull on them when vehicles are involved are endless.

IF you play it alone it's a 7.4, if you play it with at least one friend it becomes a 9.0 ~ weird, but true.

For me, the best part of the game was the insane weapon combinations you could find. It didn't always work in your favor (every so often, you'd find something like a shotgun with a sniper scope, or a sniper with a bayonet), but when it did, you could find some truly awesome stuff. The design of the game is such that you want to just keep hunting, too. With four different classes to master, the replayability factor is pretty high.

This guy has it right. As fun as Borderlands is to solo, it was really made with multiplayer in mind, and that's where it shines. I don't recommend split-screen, the interface wasn't really optimized for it, but if you can get a 4-way Xbox Live game going, it'll be the most fun you've had in awhile.

It's like what...5 bucks now?

You could definitely get 5 bucks worth of entertainment out of it.
It's 20, 30 for the GOTY
The GOTY is worth it, some of the best value DLC ever. The last two they made were massive.
I've played through it a few times now and almost completely in splitscreen.

It's wierd, I actually haven't played it alone. Ever.

I , or I'd rather say, we (my buddy and I) already finished the game with all DLC (except Moxxi's DLC, we did that one for achievements, it was mind numbingly boring and we're pretty eager to skip it in all our future playthroughs) like 2 to 3 times, with another playthrough looming in the horizon.

The game is seriously fun if you get to play it with a buddy, for that, it's easier to get someone to play with you, at least in splitscreen, in the console version.

I have the PC version and I've been playing it with my buddy all this time, but be warned though, the PC version is a rather sloppy port, it's completely playable (I love to play it with a 360 controller, oh the irony), but it's not entirely optimal in the performance deparment and also, it doesn't offer split-screen mode, wich sucks (Borderlands 2 will have splitscreen coop for PC!).

So yeah, beyond those details, it's pretty much Diablo in FPS, with loot whoring and lots of blood and guts spilling everywhere. I love it :)

I think now isn't the best time to buy the game, largely because it was heavily centered around being an open world co-op experience and now that its been almost two years since its release, it may be difficult finding players outside of your friends list. The solo run option is still available, but playing the game on Solo is like playing Left 4 Dead with just the bots. It exists, but the game is just so boring by yourself. In short, if you're looking for a co-op shooter, wait 3 months for the sequel in September. Alternatively, you could buy Dead Island, which is also a co-op shooter, but do yourself a favor and DON'T BUY DEAD ISLAND!

Do you like FPS games, tons of loot and some RPG elements?
Congratulations, you'll probably love Borderlands!

Finished the game solo myself. It can be tricky at times, and boss fights are pretty silly, but you shouldn't have too much problems with it. The DLC is awesome and well worth the money, so I recomend getting the GOTY edition!

As for what I loved about the game... It's one of the few games where I really loved playing as a sniper. Works really well in Borderlands and you can have lots of fun by just jumping up to an area that's impossible for the mobs to reach and pick them off one by one.
It's also a very long game, but I don't recall ever getting bored with it or feeling that it got repetative. Haven't really played it since 2010 though.

Watch some gameplay videos and you should get a good idea on how the game is. Easier to make a decision first hand, rather than hearing about other peoples experiences.
