We are way, way over due for a new console generation. 7 years is practically ancient. I'm really excited to see what Microsoft and Sony especially have in store, but I doubt I'll be able to afford either consoles for a couple of years.

Mainly I'm hoping for:

-Way better AI
-Tools that make it easier to make far bigger more open enviroments
-Better animations
-Motion controls that are actually worth a damn which I don't have to use if I don't want to
-Something new I shouldn't even think up
-Tools that make making visual impressive games cheaper and less time consuming (which has been the main problem with this generation)

I'm probably going to go down the Sony route next generation (Xbox right now) as they're probably the better investment over all. Plus I think Microsoft is going to try to but in on the motion control/family friendly/shovelware market that Nintendo have left wide open with the WiiU not being as motion control centric.

I just got a Xbox slim last year, so when/if I get the next generation of it, I will go through the same plan. I will wait two to three years and then buy the "better version" (more memory, backwards compatible, etc).

Everything
That is exactly what I will be doing. With the more expensive games getting price cuts for the present generation, I can get more games that I haven't played yet. Also, I have a lot of obligations to do (play the Bioshocks again, play Red Dead Redemption again, play the Mass Effects again, and many more things to do). By the time I'm done and satisfied, I will get the newest generation of my console - whenever that will be.

They better make them backwards compatible.

Anyhow, I am more interested in larger, greater environments, smarter and more numerous fields, higher MP player caps, and levels that sprawl on forever than graphics. Graphics are good enough as is to me. Animations are more important anyways.

Games need to focus more of gameplay than graphics.

For example Skyrim. It does look great but the needed more options in it. You should be able to go through the game talking your way out of situations instead of killing everyone.

Broadening up options and ways to play the game should come first instead of graphics. More games should take their cues from New Vegas, The Witcher 2 and Crysis, with non-linearity as opoosed to ever greatening graphics.

So what new tech can allow for much better AI? Because that's what we need more than anything.
Two things. Faster processors and better programming.

PCs are already working on the former, with some of AMDs and Intels new (and even some older) CPUs being incredibly fast. The current gen of consoles just don't have the processing prowess to do anything truly new or innovative in that regard. (because, let's face it people, they're running on near decade old tech at this point)

However, the latter part is very much determined by the skill, proficiency, and talent of the developers. Unfortunately, many of them lack the right skill sets to make innovative AI systems. Due, in part, to the fact that most AI systems rely heavily on established design philosophies of the past. Some companies have been make strides in the field, but much of their efforts are stifled by the current generation of consoles.

We already have that tech. It's right there in the Xbox 360 and PS3. Even moreso in the PC. The CPU power we have at our fingertips is more than enough I'm sure. It's just not so easy.
See above.

I keep hearing that Microsoft is saying the new Xbox will be able to put out Avatar caliber graphics or whatever.

Now I've never seen Avatar so is that necessarily a good thing?
It would be, if it were even possible. Put simply, we don't have the hardware yet to render scenery at that level of detail in real time. At least, not in a consumer-grade game console.

What's more likely is the new line of consoles will be utilizing GPUs akin to AMDs 6000 series or, possibly, a variation of the new 7000 series.

The facts:
I am actually a shocked how young many of you appear to be, and I don't mean that in any derogatory sense. I just get the impression this current gen is your first, because you don't understand that we are LATE for the next gen. It doesn't normally take this long for a jump from one console to another. We need another jump to, because developers have both said and displayed in their games that they are starting to struggle with the limitations of the current hardware. Xbox graphics are getting to the point that they seems like they would be ideal... for a Nintendo game. I am basically saying the 360 now looks the equivalent of the wii when it first came out, because we all know have have seen how much better games can look (look at Battlefield 3 for the 360 vs. the PC)
The Facts:
Gamers realize that this generation of consoles is "overdue" by previous standards, but this cycle of consoles was predicted to last longer than any one before. I mean, last year we were told that many of them will last up to ten years [http://www.computerandvideogames.com/307428/ps3-will-last-a-minimum-of-10-years-sony/]. This has nothing to do with age, but the expectations we were told to have.

My opinion
Read comments more closely. Also that your The Facts, My Opinion post is pretty pretentious. Especially because stating and opinion at the end of your facts one made it irrelevant. But also that most of us knew it was coming because of devs comments that you mentioned above. Its just a disappointment that another generation has to come along to create games that we're supposedly going to be available this generation
Wow I can't believe I am being chastised for doing exactly what everyone gets yelled at for not doing: making it very clear that my unpopular opinion was just that, my opinion. XD I guess no matter what you do you can't make everyone happy, eh?

I understand Xbox's release, but the PS4? Really? Literally 12 seconds after they released the Vita? Too much hardware Sony, It's getting a bit out of hand, you haven't even phased the PSP out yet.

I'm sure specs will be impressive throughout, Maybe Xbox will take the lead this time?

Seriously why do they have to keep pumping out new systems every couple of years? We are to the point now that they won't be much better than our current ones, and I am not paying another $400-$600 just so I can continue enjoying games.
What???

PS1 1994
PS2 2000
PS3 2006

If the PS4 is announced now it will be likely 2013 before the console it out, that's the largest generation gap yet and you complain it is too short?

People really have changed this generation.

Before it was "yay, a new generation. Games are going to get so much better!"

Now it's "fuck that, I don't want new things, keep the old tech. I don't want progress!"
You're right. I don't want more progress. I haven't liked any of the progress made in this half-generation. I hate motion controls, and I think 3D tv is a stupid idea. I really don't want to pay the cost of a new console to get features that I probably won't want in the first place.

I don't really care, because aside from the ability to create bigger games, I do not care about more powerful gaming machines. Yes, the consoles are holding the PC back when it comes to graphics, but the day I actually give a flying fuck about how realistic the graphics are in games is the day I stop playing regular games and spend the rest of my life playing Big Rigs over the road racing.

I predict they will rip off nintendo again as the game of follow the leader continues. Also I agree with the person who said the new systems wont lead to better games, though maybe a few new IP's.

Personally, if all of these rumors about a dvr in the new xbox turn out to be true and they start phasing out cable dvrs, I'd be more than happy to upgrade to the new generation. Though i doubt it will be called the "xbox 720".

The point is, though, that we have to embrace each step if we ever want computer graphics to hit the point where they are indistinguishable from reality.
Yeah, that's a good point. It'll just take me longer to physically embrace this next step because of the price : perceived improvement of this next step. After a few years and price has dropped a few hundred dollars then I might feel justified getting it.

It's not possible in any way, shape or form on any computer anywhere. There's a reason CGI studios use renderfarms.

I'm not making the mistake of buying a console again. Sony and Microsoft can shove them up their fat bums for all I care.

Personally, and this could just be because I'm a bitter old PC gamer, I think the next generation of consoles is going to be the least impressive ever when it comes to improvements in gaming capabilities with even more emphasis put on multimedia capabilities instead.

Well my initial action was kinda "noooooo :( i don't want to buy a new console, my xbox has years left in it :("

But after reading about the hardware and more memory side of things then okay i can see how next gen consoles will be another leap forward, thing is im actually perfectly happy with my Xbox360 and the graphics its pumping out and games its producing (skyrim, Gears 3, Rage etc) they keep an old fart of a gamer like me respecially happy when i think back to the days of the commodore 64 and the nes.

Im still impressed by what the current hardware can do and is achieving, so im am/was happy for it to stay around for another few years, but i take the arguents for extra memory and ram on board.

I just hope the next lot are backwards compatable :( I love my old games and i don't want to be reduced to using them as coasters when my xbox red rings in its decrepit old age
