It's amazing, seriously. The single player feels a bit rushed towards the end, but it's still very, very good. And some of the games I've had in multiplayer have been the best experiences I've ever had a game... Ever.
However, the gameplay isn't that well explained ingame, and a lot of people essentially played it wrong. If you see anyone who says that the game has 'really badly done RTS sections', ignore them, they don't know what they're talking about. The game builds up to these huge freeform battles, but they are in no way RTS unless you explicitly play them like one. Follow these tips and you'll be fine:
- Don't spend all the time in the air. You're not a mouse cursor, you're your army's leader. You are the most important and powerful thing your army has - don't keep out of the battle any longer than necessary!
- Don't try to micromanage. This isn't Starcraft. The reason the orders work on all nearby units is because 95% of the time that's exactly what you should be directing. Don't try to separate out your troops, there's no need - you can see anything coming to attack your stuff by just flying across and having a look; if it's a minor threat you can kill it yourself with your axe and guitar combat, and if there's a lot of enemies you can bring your army over pretty fast anyway.
- use your Double Teams and solos!!! This is the number one reason why people fail at the battles. Double Teams are much more powerful than your regular combat, and it's great fun to drive all the cars and stuff yourself. Similarly, solos are very powerful and useful, and you shouldn't neglect them.
- Judge when you can take on enemies and when you can't. By all means kill any unprotected or weak enemies, but don't try to jump into the whole enemy army and kill everything with your axe, that's just dumb.
Finally, once you've played through the single player, get yourself online! The matchmaking can be somewhat quiet at times, but most of the time you don't have to wait longer than a minute or two to find a game, and often much less. And in the multiplayer you get to command the other two armies too, which is great fun.
I hope this helps (and that you actually read it!) and that you have fun with the game if you do buy it. It's definitely a hidden gem.
