First, read this: http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/10/13/florida.teen.burned/index.html
Wow. That is heinous, and I wish I could erase it from my mind. Pyros may be funny in TF2, but not irl, people. But did you catch that part at the beginning? Apparently Michael Brewer owed one of the subjects who set him on fire $40 for a video game, and in comes that awkward connection to games in general that somebody will use to attack the gaming community and picture us all as violent, heartless thugs. The course of events is, allegedly, as follows: Brewer owes another teenager $40 for a video game. Brewer does not pay, at least not as soon as the other child would like. In retaliation, the other teenager steals Brewer's father's bike. Brewer reports the crime. To get revenge on him for this, the other teenager and his cronies set Brewer on fire. This is clearly the result of childlike egos and petty revenge, only having a mild connection to video games, but I know that somebody will grab a hold of the connection to games and use it against the gaming community at large, so I'm just giving you a heads-up.
Speaking about the crime now, what do you think could have caused the other teenager to go to such extremes as setting another person on fire? What could have been done, on the part of the community, to prevent this? Think constructively- I don't want too much playing of the blame game going on, people. Just because gaming is treated as a scape goat, that's no reason for us to do that to other subjects.
