Going to my first Brawl tournament on Sunday and was wondering if anyone could reveal some secrets about their favorite characters or how they play in general. I play a good amount but only against 5 other friends and I'm afraid I've become a bit attuned to only counter how they play.

As Wolf, I'm more of a block/parry block/dodge/attack kind of guy. I make a lot of use out of the shield as I do those lil flips left n right and making use of critical hits when necessary..

As link or child link, I spam his ranged attacks, jump up toss a bomb, quick arrow, boomerang, quick arrow, bomb. if he gets too close I knock the guy back out of range and rinse and repeat..

Good luck on your tournament!

Gannondorf, a block/parry style where I can avoid most hits, absorb the few hits I do take, then when they mess up, knock them into next tuesday.

I used to play as Pit and spam the C-stick (and win every goddamn time) but my Gamecube controller broke, so I picked up playing Samus (really good aerial smashes, grabs and damage-building attacks), Metaknight (NO I WILL NOT LET YOU BACK ON THIS PLATFORM) and Pit, properly (spamming smash attacks. Seriously, his smash attacks are freaking insane).

~EDIT~

Yes! YES! I used to think that I was the only one who read Awkward Zombie but now I know that I am not alone!

Bowser for casual, Mr. Game & Watch for serious play. Both have had massive upgrades from their previous incarnations in Melee and I learned them well back then. That said, I've only ever played in one Tournament.

Wolf is a badass and easy to do good with even at an amateur level, as his power attacks actually have a very long range of attack, just try to avoid getting hit and use his left or right smash attack.

Pit is also fun due to his high speed range attack where you can influence the arrow's direction. His down b shield can deflect ranged attacks, but also null out a melee attack if used not long before contact.

But if you want to be truly hardcore, use the tier brackets that many nerds have spent time building. They vary between English and Japanese nerds, but they both agree that meta-knight is the highest tier character in the game, and snake is the second, so you should prob ask around for those two.

I play as Ness. Landing a PK Fire followed by the Smash+A attack is oh-so-satisfying. Yoyos are perfect for clearing space around (and above) you, and Ness's bair attack, when landed properly, does a TON of damage and has fantastic knockback. His fair is also great for disruption, and don't forget about hitting enemies with a PK Thunder when they're near the top of the screen (or, even better, connect with Ness's recovery move; fantastic knockback, even at lower damage levels).

As for Olimar, his uair is a killer, especially with yellow Pikmin. Since he's also a small target, he can dodge attacks easily, and sacrifice his Pikmin as distractions. His smashes are fantastic, and Pikmin Throw can really rack up damage with non-Purple Pikmin, especially the white ones.

Meta Knight needs to not be. Seriously, I voted for him to be banned from tournaments. It's a little absurd how broken he actually is. Before I sound like I'm just complaining because I get my ass kicked (and I do), I've read up on all the characters, and he's so much better, it's actually kind of absurd. I've been to a tournament and seen a man play Meta Knight and be completely untouchable. Not just because he was good. The guy he was playing knew his stuff too. They were probably pretty close in skill, but Meta Knight is the deciding factor.

Sorry, the bile and hate is over.

I play Zelda a lot, despite how low she is in the tier list. I like the power of her smash attacks and I actually have an okay aerial game with her too. The biggest problem I find with her is her lack of directional influence after her third jump. Anyway, I tend to keep to a ground based heavy knockback game.

I play Snake, trying to keep out of direct combat if there's more than one opponent using mines and the Nikita missile. If that makes me a noob, then so be it, but at least I don't use sonic.

Fox (uh...duh?)

I like to use the throw attack where you throw an enemy in the air shoot them, the use the..."Foxfire?" attack upward for extra damage. Plus I'm like the only one that know's how to control his speed.

Lucario -

I have no fighting stragety or combo; I just like fighting with him sometimes.

Snake -

Only because I use his RPG-7 attack when close for major damage and the mortar attack every chance I get becuase I think it has a decent amount of splash damage.

I play Samus, no real reason, I just like how I can fire rockets and she has some fairly epic smashes.

I tend to play random because I feel like itz the funnest way to play...I play at a tournament level so i end up playing with friends who are a lot worse than me so playing random is a good way to get a challenge and get good with everyone.

Me, I used to use Kirby. Lemme tell you; if anyone said to me, "Let's play Melee!" I would have to resist the temptation to punch them in the face. Now that I hate Melee and love Brawl, my character is Metaknight. Not only mysterious, chivalrous, powerful and cool-looking, but (coincidentally) he also suits the way I play perfectly.

I can actually hold my own in Brawl and actually win now and then using him. First of all, his drill attack allows me to hit and run my opponents, especially when one gets another in the line of fire because they guess that's what I'm about to do. Everyone (but that hapless loser in my way) wins! Usually, there's two people dealing those weak but fast attacks and I plow right through them in just such a way that they end up right next to each other again once they land so they leave me alone in order to continue their catfight. The tornado spin attack allows me to hit and run with less impunity from counter-attacks, but I can catch and savage one character instead of all of them, doing more damage. My regular sword-spam attack keeps them in the air, suffering for only about 30 seconds to a minute before they slap me away. It's when I catch them in a place they can't counter-attack that they're really screwed. Shrewd players will ignore me beating them so they don't have to do as much of the dirty work themselves and risk getting hit. My smash is faster than most everyone else, and can be charged if necessary to really finish them. Short ranged, though, so don't get caught off-guard.

The only weakness of Metaknight's is his pitiful Super Smash, which is easily dodged most of the time and even when it hits there are many stronger ones. Hope this has helped you play as and fight Metaknight!

Well, if you play Final Destination or any map with a drop-off and a wide aerial range, Olimar is unstoppable, because he can use his aerial side-smash to knock the enemy straight down and then Up-B to return to the stage.
