Now that the world is a-buzz with the new windows 7 open/closed beta (open to the first 2.5 million users) what are your thoughts on the new OS? Good? Bad? Ugly?

I'm currently downloading the 3.2 Gig ISO file for the beta. Ironically enough I'm downloading it onto my Ubuntu box. So I personally don't have too much input on the beta

I downloaded a Virtual machine of the closed beta build not too long ago. And from what I used of it, it was really fast. I was a little too impatient to install applications and drivers on it, I was just fooling around with it. Its much, much, much faster than Vista and no where near as resource intensive as Vista is. The VM i was using was an 8 gig virtual drive with 512 MB of RAM. Even on that limited platform, the thing flew through file operations, window switching (with full Aero on BTW) was probably faster than my 4 Gig Vista box.

So while waiting forever and a day (and hoping that my registration key wont be used) I'd like to hear what people have tried it think of it.

I don't know about Windows 7, I'm a bit iffy about downloading it.

But from several tech demos at CES, etc, I realized one very important thing:

Windows 7 could just as easily be Windows Vista Service Pack 2.

But I guess they want a fresh start. I just got Vista, too. Damn.

I'm typing this response with the 7 beta right now. All I can say is... the install seems to do nothing for disturbingly long periods of time. Just let do its' work, it's worth it.

One word: AMAZING.

Like, seriously.

Screw Vista.

They should have gone straight to Windows 7.
Windows 7 was a response to the failings of windows vista, they couldn't have gone straight to windows 7 without the gross problems of vista. Think the Wii, Nintendo wouldn't have created that console without living through the problems of the game cube.
