Actually, this is a bit of a (pleasant) suprise. While I did expect a 2D platformer to come to the 3DS eventually, I was worried that the first Mario game on the platform would end up being a 3D one. Thankfully, since it is a Super Mario Bros. game, it will definitely be a 2D platformer.

While I will not be purchasing a 3DS at launch due to region locking, this announcement still makes me excited. I cannot wait to see how Miyamoto will use stereoscopic 3D, since I believe it has potential in 2D platformers.

NSMB was awesome. haven't played the Wii one, but this kind of excites me. It'll probably be a long time before I get a 3DS though. :(
Oddly enough, I found the DS version funner then the Wii version. (played Wii version first)

*Feigns surprise* Oh wow, a new side-scrolling Super Mario Bros! Amazing, I was not expecting this! Anyways, call me when they release announce a Super Mario game like 64 of Galaxies. I never was a big fan of the side-scrolling titles myself.

I read of few of those Iwata asks interviews, and as a huge Nintendo fan, I found them extremely interesting and informative. Did you know, for example, that the only reason there were 2 quests in the original Legend of Zelda was because of a mistake made by Takashi Tekuza in which he only coded half of the original plans for each dungeon? I also learned a few tricks that were used to save space in Super Mario Bros. I can't believe I never realized that shrinking and going down a pipe produced the same sound effect, just like jumping on a koopa and swimming do. There are lots of photos of "ancient" documents such as sketches, brainstorming sheets, and control layouts that were created as early as 1985 for Zelda and Mario. I find it all fascinating- how these people sit around a table and talk about originally creating a couple of beloved franchises in such an informal and unscripted way.

well any i am not sure if i will get the 3ds unless something better then Legend of Zelda OoT or another mario game come out i am not getting it
i will certify that i am a fan Legend of Zelda games it just i am a cheap person who would rather wait for a new loz game to come out on the 3ds before buying it since a remake means nothing to me

How can this be?

**SPOILERS**

I thought Mario died at the end of the last game? Are they going to resurrect him or something? That would be milking it.

**END SPOILERS**

I wonder if it will involve jumping. I hope that Bowser guy is in it, it would be interesting for him to kidnap Peach.

So where's the news here? New Mario game by Nintendo, with no concrete data other than that.

I laughed so damn hard. You made my day.

OT, if it's based off Super Mario Bros, then it's bound for excellence.

I don't think I've ever seen a thread with as much sarcasm as in this one!

That aside I still doubt I'll be getting a 3DS until something actually grabs my interest. Zelda OoT news was good but I've already got it on my GC so I'm not shelling out on a 200 quid plus handheld to play a game I already own.

How will the 3D work with the 2D conventions of Mario though?

Does it really matter?
While I hold alot of respect for Miyamoto and the games he has worked on over the years, one has to question his common sense.

Why wasn't this announced at the same time as the 3DS and released as a launch title?

Is this serious? For a moment I thought it was the lamest April Fool's joke ever. Because it isn't surprising in any way at all.
