I love how all of you are so special and unique and all, but are just held back. I am sure it's very comforting. Does it not surprise anyone that apparently everyone here thinks they are slightly above average intelligence? Is the escapist some sort of bright beacon of intelligence, gathering up all the poor lost brilliant souls that just could not apply themselves? I think not.

I call bunk, I think it's less smarts and more an ability to bluff your way through academia until things get serious. Having being both on the student and on the teaching side of the classroom, I know how easy it is to bluff, and I know it does not really help you when you actually need to apply that knowledge, which certainly does not happen at uni.

to be fair I don't think anyone is claiming to be a super genious.....in terms of school work somtimes its not hard to get by without work...I just don't think schoolwork is always the best benchmark for "smarts"

I am sort of like the people you describe.
I was always able to get an A or B while putting minimal effort into things like homework.

This meant that when I got to a level where simply paying attention in class and trying to understand things intuitively wouldn't cut it, my grades started dropping a bit.
And I never managed to do anything about it, because my way of doing schoolwork was just too ingrained in me.
I'd always tell myself "next week is when I start putting effort into school", but I never came around to it.
It's a pity too. I'm sure I could have managed better grades than what I ended up with.

But in the end it doesn't matter.
There are more important things than grades in the world. I was dealing with depression for a decent bit of my last few years of school, and by the end of upper secondary I'd reached a personal philosophy which I consider more or less necessary for me to live without being strangled by depression.
I want to live my life now, not in some hypothetical "10 years into the future" that I'm planning towards. I don't want to sacrifice the first 30 years of my life just so the remaining 50 can go smoothly.
I'm getting the impression that you're condemning me for not putting grades as my number one priority.
Maybe you should consider the idea that not everyone considers school the most important thing in their life, even if they have a talent for it.

Additionally, joking about the situation may look to you like they think their attitude is 'cool' or some shit, but at least in my case (and I suspect in most others), it's a case of these people being too used to being able to score straight As without studying for them to simply start putting a lot of effort into studying.
What I'm saying is, most of these people have probably tried fixing their laziness and their 'attitude' with poor results.
When you're talking to them on the internet, you're talking to a person who has given up fixing their 'laziness' and come to accept it. As such, they joke about it and make references to their situation as a way to come to terms with it. They're not trying to appear cool (at least I'm guessing most of them aren't). They're just telling the internet about how stupid their situation is.

Most of them aren't trying to be smug. It's less "I'm so cool because I don't put effort into school" and more "Heh, looks like I can't bring myself to change my situation. Well, might as well joke about it."

... Are you me from another universe that's nearly identical to this one? This pretty much sums me up...

My "brilliant but lazy" friend in high school used to be the smartass, getting decent marks in a few subjects, but is lazy as sin.

I'm now working for a large multinational, and he's unemployed, picking up casual work as a flea-market person.

So yeah, damn straight I'm going to bring up how his laziness is holding him back, not out of anger, not out of spite, but just a "screw you, I knew that my comparative unbrilliance but my desire to succeed would beat your life strategy".

I am kinda reverse this, I have been called "insanely smart" and have a a knack for picking up information by just listening to people talk and I used to work super hard and was top of my class and was elected class president and everything and everyone(except my parents who always told me to do what I like) kinda expected me to become a politician or a CEO or something. So when I finished school and when I went to university I started to study economics and was working really hard again but I noticed that I wasn't having any fun and that I didn't want to spend my life that way and after a year dropped everything, switched schools to study engineering with a childhood friend and am having the time of my life right now being in the top third of my class without much hard work(I only put in more time than necessary is when It's a group project or presentation where the others depend on me)

And I whenever I meet people from school they accuse me of wasting my potential since I am perfectly happy "just being an engineer"

I'm one of those people, according to several professors and psychiatrists, I never really believed it, I thought they were giving me the "You could do anything you want if you try hard enough" which I knew was complete bullshit when they first said it.

Because others have explained this more eloquently than I ever could, I'm not going to try. However, I will mention that I hardly ever do homework. I have probably done less than a quarter of everything ever given to me. Also, I have never studied outside of class. The only reason I take notes is to get the teachers off my back. I passed high school with a b- average only because of test scores. Despite all that, I was accepted into a fairly decent college. So... take that for what it's worth.

I'm not brilliant but lazy, I prefer to think of myself as a little below average but hardworking.
(Though once I did miss a whole month and an entire section of classes of college and showed up to the exam and got 91% but that was not because I was lazy but was avoiding someone who was kinda stalking me).

I think brilliant but lazy people are a little annoying. Mostly because I've met people who say they are like this and so don't try. And then they get behind and whine they may actually have to study or something. And also, cause if you are brilliant, why the fuck would you not apply yourself?

Reminds me of something my old art lecturer used to say- talented people are much less valuable than hardworking people, because talented people get told they are talented and so think they don't have to work hard.

This is the only true example of brilliant laziness in the entire thread. It raises the bar so high not even people's vague self-reporting anecdotes of that one time they fluked a test without studying can hope to compare. It's transcendent.

Personally, I always took a little offense that I need to justify my existence when I never really asked for it. It's like saying to all the posters here, you must be equally as interesting to every other poster here just because we expect that from you. Who the hell cares?

It's a little annoying the expectations people have for you when they consider you smarter than average. That you must contribute because you're 'gifted'. I've yet to have someone actually give me a good reason why other than you're just gifted and you should share. Why doesn't that go for anything else? Does a really sexy guy or gal have to share that sex around because they are gifted? Should a really funny person always be on and make us laugh because hey, they were blessed with humor? Should unnaturally strong people always be put into professions that takes advantage of that one aspect of their being just because that's the one we like to label most important?

Worse yet is being an intelligent non-white person. I can't tell you the looks I received when people find out I listen to Rap music, or every now and again with lapse to 'Urban Speak'. That I am the 'future of my race' because I'm more acceptable somehow. It gets very, very insulting.

Look, Religion says I'm special, but most people don't believe in that any more. Science says I'm random dna and if just squirt out some more, I've achieved my purpose. Most of Society doesn't really care about me, so why should I care about it?
