I thought some of you might have some great British music recommendations.

I recently discovered the Kaiser Chiefs and immediately fell in love with their music - came across the video for Ruby somewhere and grabbed up the rest of their stuff right away.
I've always been a fan of The Wonder Stuff and Status Quo. A shame none of these hit it as big as they deserved in North America (I'm in Canada).

What other British bands have never hit it big over here but are worth a listen?

Don't know if they hit big in the USA (and i doubt even less that you'll like their music), but The Cure was a pretty big band back in the day.

The Smiths, the Clash, The Jam, The Killers, The Libertines, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Def Leppard, Lostprophets, Muse, Pendulum and We are Scientists, just to name all the ones from a quick scan of 'my music' (so you know they're good!)

Oh crap yeah they are; I think I just always group that kind of music together since they sound really similar to bands like Kasabian and Oasis. My bad.

Snow Patrol, The Feeling, Le Roux, Adele, Corinne Bailey Rae. That's all I can think of for British pop music.

First, you're great and awesome. The Kaiser Chiefs are an acquired taste and I know as a fact we're the only people here who like them.

British music? Try The Rumble Strips.

Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, Muse, Biffy Clyro, a lot of old 70s progressive rock (King Crimson etc.), Depeche Mode, New Order... yeah can't be bothered listing any more. :D

Oh yeah, did I say Porcupine Tree?

Snow Patrol isn't pop.

The Super Furry Animals. Check out their album "Dark days/Light Years". Their lead singer has been featured on a song by the Gorillaz. Superfast Jellyfish I believe.

I like them, too.
But as far as British music goes, that's really it.

In the U.S. they're sometimes sold as a Britpop band. I mostly meant that they're fairly mainstream, and they get played on pop music stations here. Ditto for Adele. Her musical style is more inline with soul music, but she gets played on pop radio.

Thanks everyone, so far so good...I'm on vacation next week and I'm definitely going to check out some of these groups.

Got a 4 hour drive tomorrow and I've got Kaiser Chiefs and Jonathan Coulton (not Brit but I'm working through his library as well) queued up on the iPod.

If the kids and gf wouldn't kill me I'd blast Dream Theater all the way :) Count of Tuscany!!
Or Satriani or ELP or Yes :) Decisions, decisions.

Dire Straits, The Jam, and The Clash have all been mentioned already, so I'll do it again. Only louder.

DIRE STRAITS, THE JAM, AND THE CLASH.

To that list, I'd add Elvis Costello, The English Beat (or just The Beat, depending on who you ask), The Pogues, Generation X, The Heartbreakers, I Killed The Prom Queen (Australian, but meh.), Iggy and the Stooges, Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, The Proclaimers, We Were Promised Jetpacks (both Scottish bands, but again meh.), and Motorhead, among many many others.

Do note that almost all of these bands are of the punk-ish or hard rock persuasion, so if you dislike either genre, chances are good you won't like many of the bands listed. But don't let that stop you from giving each and every one a try...you just might be surprised. (Plus it'll make me feel validated.)
