*It won't let me change the friggin' poll so just ignore it :(, and this was going so well...*

Recently I have changed my CPU's heat sink, and have tried both the "Blob" method and a complete covering method, I am just here to report my findings to you, and ask if you have had similar results.

First I will explain for those "not in the know" what each of the methods I have tried are:

All tests were performed with artic silver MX-5 on a Intel Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHZ
The overclocked readings are from 3GHZ

All temperatures were recorded with "Realtemp"

Blob Method

Place a pea sized amount of thermal paste on the middle of your CPU and press down on it with an even piece of plastic/glass until very thin and covering a circle in the middle of your CPU.

Idle: 38c
Under Load: 48c

Overclocked Idle: 42c
Under load: 52c

Cover Method

Add thermal paste to cover the CPU entirely spreading thinly and attempting to keep air bubbles out.

Pre-applied thermal paste (MX-5 still)

Idle: 41c
Under load: 53c

Overclocked Idle: 45c
Under load: Overheat and blue screen. :(

Self applied

Idle: 45c
Under load: 56c

Overclocked Idle: 49c
Under load: Overheat and blue screen.

Conclusion

Well obviously from this I have found using MX-5 with the blob method is the most effective, so if your feeling brave and your CPU keeps overheating, I would suggest using this method. Also there are other methods you can use for applying thermal paste, but I didn't want to waste my paste (At £6 a VERY small tube). Another method I would like to hear someones experiences with is the line method :D.

The poll

Just to cure my curiosity further, I would like to know if anyone else has braved the thermal paste minefield?

This is my first "Long post" so be nice! :D

I put a blob in the center and moved it around with my finger because I didn't have any peices of plastic or glass small enough on hand.

Considering the processor hasn't overheated yet I think it worked re

Lol I cut a piece of clear plastic out of a sheet in the garage with a hack saw >.<

How do you prevent suction from making little "hills" in the paste in the blob method?

I always used a nylon bag and my finger to spread it evenly.

I find it odd that you Overheat and blue screen at such low temps, most possessors have a max threshold of 85c.

I don't think hills really did that much, I had a metric ton when I did it, and I am getting ok temps.

I think the TJ max of the q6600 is 100c, but I bluescreen with a clock error (using the same FSB) but not with blob method? Guessing its heat related.
