The number of people who are intimate with the inner workings of the universe are an extremely small proportion of the population, and as I have proven myself a failure at science, I have little reason to continue much longer. All I see is darkness in the future, as media scaremongering and deliberate obfuscation of the facts keeps us from progression.

One day, for your own good, I really hope that you wake up out of the spiral of self-pity, see just how you're behaving, and think to yourself "I never want to act like that again. Ever."

I'm sure that you have more than enough redeeming qualities. Show them, instead of playing along to the same tune all the time.

What we are seeing is the degradation of a figure of speech. "Losing faith in the world" has become such an overused term on the Internet, and on these forums especially, that it's slowly becoming a reaction about on the level of a facepalm. People post up some tragic or idiotic story, and say it's made them lose faith in humanity. In reality, it's not REALLY a permanent state like they let on. They just want to be the one pointing out the stupidity the loudest, so they jump straight to "losing faith in humanity" so nobody else can top them.

Unfortunately, there are still some fuddy-duddies like us around who feel that losing faith in humanity is not a light or temporary thing, so to us threads like that come across as overly-dramatic at best and stupidly childish at worst. Soon the phrase won't even be worth using anymore because it will be next to meaningless. Isn't the Internet a wonderful thing?

I miss the old RAK. The one that posted awesome long and informative posts. This new RAK just seems to grouchy, and a touch whiny. I would think that after some of the posts I have read you wouldn't let something as simple as media and political scaremongering confuse and depress you so much.

Damn, this guy figured me out. Honestly, how could I actually hate humanity? They've given me all the nice things I take for granted, like my car, my computer, proper construction techniques, the development of the scientific method...

I mean, I don't like a lot of people, but I don't honestly hate humanity. I'm just being contrarian. There was too much of the sunshine and rainbows in this topic.

(That said, my relationship problems are legitimate, but I understand that's just because I'm not a very nice person than any single aspect of my personality.)

It's cool to be a misanthrope apparently.

I dislike hipsters with a passion that would be unbecoming for any hipster to exude. There's a commercial with a guy dressed vaguely like a hipster, and I immediately knew I wanted nothing to do with whatever they were selling. Because if it's hipster cool, it's probably not worth buying in the first place (and it's paradoxical to be hipster cool anyway).

On topic: I completely agree with the poster. It's silly to think that just because there is a wave of dispassionate, ironic idiots mainstream right now (and everyone else showing passion seems to be less than intelligent), it's silly to think that that's the way it'll always be. Someday, we'll take pride in the things we love and be passionate about them regardless of who's around or whether or not it's cool to be. And just because someone else knows about it, doesn't mean it's crap... is my hipster bias showing? I kind of hope so.

It's true that these things are very nice. Sure, there are millions of people in the world who don't have a computer, internet, or medical care- let alone clean water to drink. But we don't give a shit about them, do we?

Go fucking do something about it if you're that upset about it. Admittedly if you're the same age as me there isn't much you can right now, but when I'm older I've decided rather than spend my extra cash on loads of luxuries I'm going to give a large portion of my wages to charity, maybe even volunteer work out there. This attitude towards bad stuff doesn't make bad stuff any better, it just makes it seem worse. If everybody sits in their house moaning about how shit things are, how are they going to get better, get a positive outlook and help as one, it would get so much stuff fixed if suddenly everybody would decide to co-operate. But no, humanity is shit, you've already decided, co-operation will never happen.

I agree with you completely and I applaud you for your plan to give money charity, but for the love of goodness be careful about how you use that charity money. There are far too many cases in which donation money isn't used properly. The thing is, the developed nations have been incredibly generous in these past few years; more and more people are starting to donate money to charitable causes, and there has been some really good things happening because of it.

The problem is, a lot of donators are rather ill-informed, and often donate money to the wrong areas. Some places may get tons of charitable assistance for "celebrity" viruses like AIDS, when the aid they really need is for the simple diseases like Tuberculosis.

Furthermore, I've also heard stories about lack of effort to make communities who are in need more self-reliant; e.g. water pumps being installed, but then locals not knowing how to fix the pump when it breaks.

So, make sure that you research and make sure you know where the money is going, how its going to be used and whether it'll be used properly with a long-term goal in mind.

OT: Yeah, people are far too pessimistic these days.. we're arguably in the Golden Age of humanity, with the most rapid development in technology and welfare that anyone has ever seen! Sure, there is a lot of work still needing to be done, but progress is being made in a massive way. We need to be proud of what we have accomplished so far, and look into the future and think "right, what to fix next?"

People that have "lost faith in humanity" have lost faith because they set a standard above what the average (emphasis on average) person is going to do, and they set this standard because it sounded good to them.
It means they're stuck on themselves, and convinced they somehow aren't part of the masses, based on qualifications they concocted for themselves. In reality, chances are they have a large number of failings too, but don't consider them real failings, cuz their failings are ok with them.

I don't personally have faith in the ability of the masses to follow revolutionary leaders of sorts (Gandhi and the like) . That's why most of them get killed. But I also know that all things evolve slowly.

In summary: If you've lost faith in humanity, it's most likely cuz you're a narcissistic whiner.
