Building a Gaming PC - A Noob's Request

So it seems my old pc is on it's last legs after a couple of years of decline. My two DVD drives either won't read discs or won't open, sound keeps cutting out in cinematics, graphics warp and stretch, fans need to be continually replaced - the list goes on. Whilst most of these issues could probably be fixed with little effort, I'm struggling to see the point in continuing to maintain an outdated piece of tech, especially when it's incapable of running anything released after 2009 even at the lowest settings.

I have a 360 which has been sating my gaming addiction admirably, but I do miss me some RTSs and a couple of issues with the newer Fallout games have left me wishing I could access the console or download some mods. Plus I'm gagging to get my hands on The Witcher 2, and though theres meant to be a console port coming by the end of the year, there was also meant to be a console port of the original too and that ended up falling through, and there's no guarantee that the port will be up to snuff anyhow.

It seems I'm in need of either a significant overhaul and upgrade of my old pc, or perhaps in need of a new one entirely. I've heard it often said on the Escapist boards and elsewhere that the pc gamer is best served by building his own, primarily because it's cheaper. My problem is that my knowledge in the area of pc construction is rather lacking. That is to say I know zilch. The upkeep of my old pc has been entirely reliant on my tech savvy father, and I'm getting tired of relying on him to fix every little hiccup. What I'm asking for is if anyone around here knows where I can find some good guides for building a pc capable of running todays games at a good standard, and whether the whole cheaper thing is actualy true.

Thanks for any help you can give.

P.S On the subject of cost, please don't weigh in unless you have first hand experience. There is little more annoying than recieving information, getting stuck into the purchasing process, only to discover half way through, after having already committed a few hundred quid, that your informant was talking out of his ass.

Whenever i'm building I head over to Tech Forums [http://www.tech-forums.net/pc/forum.php#computer-hardware] they have guides stickied in the relevant threads and the regular posters are usually happy to review your build list or even suggest one for your budget.

watch all three of these. it is long but really helps. in terms of the components themselves, i'd go for an intel core i7 something and a radeon 6970 or the gtx 570. i really want the 580 and its expensive. just browse around newegg thats all i can say. or since you look like you're in europe there are different sites that are just as good. just watch the video first.

Okay if you're building a new PC, all I need is your price range and I can put together a parts list.
(Oh, and don't listen to Eldest scroll. No one needs an i7 CPU.)

You ever tried running FSX? That sim's a fucking sponge when it comes to clock speed. I'm at 4.7Ghz and hyperthreaded and it just smiles at me and says "is that all you got"!!

If you're from the UK or Europe there's this amazing place that builds beautiful computers for pretty cheap prices with long warranties.

Well I guess I'll say £600 as a provisional budget, though I may go as high as £1000 if I must, though I'd definitely prefer not to. I already have a mouse, keyboard and monitor so unless I'm mistaken those can be left out of the budget. In terms of what I want out of a pc, I'm specifically looking for something able to play The Witcher 2, Shogun 2 Total War, Starcraft 2 and Skyrim (I know theres no specs availale for that yet but if it'll run on an xbox 360 I'm assuming it won't be miles ahead of the current crop of new releases). While I'm not concerned about getting the top performance out of them, I'd like to be able to play them with a decent fps and graphical quality.

If you can give me anything close to a rough price estimate I'll be very grateful. I'm looking at the youtube videos and sites offered by Continuity and The Eldest Scroll, but trying to wrap my head around the lingo and terminology is like trying to learn Russian, at least for my evidently insufficient brain. Obviously I'm going to need to do a lot of research on the subject to understand everything I need to, which will be mostly wasted effort if I can't actually afford what I want anyway.

This is interesting. Just played around with the sites 5 step thingummy and it seems to be suggesting that £800 would be roughly the price for a mid range gaming pc, which I guess is acceptable. Does that sound right?

Well, it depends. If you want to buy a pre-made PC, then yes that would probably be a standard price. Now, if you build the PC, then a mid-range machine would go for about £500.
