Yeah I know. I'm one of those guys. I've been to reddit, got a build from them, consulted with some buds in one of my groups but now I just want to do a full on crowd sourcing thing. Of course I'm trying not to break the bank. If I could keep the build within the ball park of $1000 that would be nice. Though I am not opposed to going over. $1500 would be my absolute limit. So I'm using one build I got from Reddit as a basis and maybe seeing if I could put something together that might be better or more my style. The ability to use Maya and UDK is crucial as well. Probably the biggest help I need is with the actual computer parts, the CPUs, video cards, mother boards etc.

So if you'd be so kind as to help a noob join the PC master race I'd be grateful and please try not to be rude. :(

I will quote my answer here

I haven't added a case or an o/s but you will need win7 pro 64 bit or newer to use 32gb of ram. Its the motherboard and O/S that dictates how ram you can use not the cpu these days. The radeon r9 270 is a bit less power than the gtx 770 4GB version but its a lot cheaper. For your requirements you need an i7 of some variety and the one I picked there is balance between power and value for money. You can adjust the cpu by picking one from the list and the searching for its benchmark to see how its stacks against other cpus.

I have two questions:

Is 32GB needed? Generally I see people say that 16GB is more than enough and most games have their recommended at around 8GB normally. Is it simply future proofing or is there a noticeable benefit to this?

I also keep seeing SSD and HDD together in builds. Is there any advantage/need to have both rather than simply having a larger SSD?

The minimum system requirement for UDK is 8GB and its the same for Maya. The more memory the better when you dealing with 3d modeling and these days they are even processing using the gpu's memory. If your are just talking for a gaming rig then 8gb is normally and 16 gb its future proofing. SSDs are faster than normal HDDs but they cost between 8 to 10 times as much per GB. You can buy a 2TB HDD for the price of 250 GB SSD. My steam folder is is 200GB on its own. The idea is that you put the O/S and the stuff that you want to load lighting quick on the SSD and you put everything else on the HDD and you don't have to worry about room
