Bulky 3DS Expansion Adds Second Thumbstick

Some believe this is a sign that Nintendo is planning a radical revamp of the 3DS with the second stick integrated, while others think it will be a specialist item akin to the Guitar Grip peripheral released with the Guitar Hero games on the DS.

Haven't they already said that all future instalments (except maybe a really cheap version) will come with 2 analogue sticks?
Anyways, just more proof that waiting for the next version was a damned good move. I feel sorry for all the early adapters though...

Isn't the whole purpose of the DS's lower screen is to give you a unique way of control in a game? What's with all the buttons and sticks?
The old Gameboy Color I have looks a lot more fun to play than this monstrosity.
I just don't get Nintendo anymore.

I was thinking an accessory that wrapped around the side and positioned the analog stick between the face buttons and the start/select buttons would be better (making the analogs set in a position similar to the 360's controller) but I suppose the extra bulk and cost will pay off if many games use it effectively. This seems like a bad time to release info about this, though, because I'm sure many people like me that were considering buying a 3DS at the lower price will now be waiting for the next version that will most likely have the new analog stick built in.

Makes me depressed looking at my 3DS now.

Still, if it means a Metroid Prime like game on the go, I could live with that.
I still have my DS library and music for when I don't want that hideous thing sticking out.

Still, I've been saying for YEARS (about the PSP) that if you want to do games in a 3D environment YOU NEED TWO ANALOG STICKS.

Seems like a no-brainer to me, but I suppose that's too much for even Nintendo these days...

This'll depend on price for me. If it's not to expensive, I might pick up one. But seriously, if it's over 20$ then I'll just pass on it and games that require it.

Instead of worrying about a second thumbstick, they need to work on a better battery for the 3DS.

I'll say the same thing that I said on another thread on the subject. If developers showed a little more creativity and intitiative, then Nintendo wouldn't need to bring out this bloated peripheral. Plenty of shooters and action games on the original DS used the touchscreen as a camera control instead of an analogue nub, and they all played perfectly fine. I personally think Metroid on the DS controlled far better than the majority of console shooters.

So yeah, I can't blame Nintendo for bringing out a peripheral. I just wish developers approached 3DS games with some actual creativity, rather than simply trying to make handheld console games.

The only problem with touch screen FPS controls is that people who play Southpaw are screwed over since there isn't an analog on the right side.

But, this is just one more reason to not adopt early because Nintendo always will release a revision of the hardware roughly a year down the line.

I've heard rumours that they're going to release an entirely new design of the 3DS with a second analog stick.
If this is true, I'll be quite unhappy, as I have been one of the few people to make the mistake of buying the device too early (even now, months after release, there have been no noteworthy ORIGINAL games released on the device. The ones that have been well received, Street Fighter 4 3d, Ocarina of Time 3d, and Star Fox 3d, are all just ports/remakes of older games).

And while I'm on a bit of a rant here, can I ask if it's just me that's finding the Captchas more annoying/harder to read these days?

Well none from the 3DS itself because it will require one AAA battery.
And it costs 20$.

I don't think that many games will use this thing. 20 dollars isn't bad. No doubt it will be packaged with some game. Probably Monster Hunter 3G. I don't think I will get myself if it isn't package with a game, but I don't think it is a bad opinion for people who want it. It's suppose to be really comfortable, so maybe it is better then it looks. I guess you could call this the 3DS's Wii Motion Plus.

The 3DS is already full of spectacular fail (between $70 price cuts and putting a focus on 2D gaming with a 3D device, it hasn't done well), and now they've finally decided it might be a good idea to include a second analog stick? It'll be interesting to see how much longer the '3D' is prevalent with the 3DS, and more importantly, how long it lasts altogether.

If they're going to make an addon like this essential to games, they should just rework the 3DS to add a second thumb stick, at a higher price, and sell this add-on so regular 3DS users can access it.

The redesigned 3ds would probably be much less bulky. This would be a slap in the face to early adopters though. Maybe a trade in deal. Mail in version 1 and get version 2 for a small fee?
